Joe Biden gets his dog (a German shepherd)
The first family-elect still hasn’t gotten a dog, but Joe Biden has picked his — a German shepherd pup from Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Vice President-elect Biden, arriving in an entourage of seven Secret Service vehicles, selected a three-month old male from a litter belonging to East Coventry breeder Linda Brown.
The purchase fulfills a campaign promise — one Jill Biden made to her husband during the presidential race. She then went on to tape pictures of different dogs on the back of the airline seat in front of Biden to inspire the candidate as he crisscrossed the country.
“He is the nicest person on this earth,” breeder Brown said about her meeting with Biden. “He was very gracious. He hugged and kissed all of the shepherds.”
A spokeswoman at Biden’s transition press office said the office does not comment on Biden’s personal matters but did confirm that Biden had two German shepherds in the past and likes the breed.
Brown said the process started with a phone call from Mark Tobin, who coordinates the New Castle County Police K-9 division in Delaware. “He came up to scout me out,” Brown told the Daily Local News. “He said I had beautiful dogs.”
Tobin, who also owns and operates a police K-9 camp, met Biden after Obama named the Delaware senator as his running mate. At that time, security stepped up for Biden and the Secret Service brought in Tobin and his canine team to do sweeps of the Biden residence for explosives. After that, Tobin said Biden asked for his help selecting a puppy and with its training.
Tobin will pick up the puppy next week and train him for six weeks before delivering him to the Bidens after the inauguration.
Biden’s granddaughters will name the puppy, Brown said the vice president-elect told her.
