Shoes fly, don’t bother him

Say what you will about our soon to depart from office president, the man has got pretty good reaction time, and was far cooler under pressure than I would have expected — considering the shoes hurled at his head today in Baghdad by an Iraqi journalist appear to miss their mark by only inches.

He was calm, if not overly articulate in the immediate aftermath, and even came up with a witty remark a little later. “I’m OK,” he said. “All I can report is it is a size 10.”

“This is your farewell kiss, you dog!” the shoe hurler shouted in Arabic as he threw his shoes, according to the Associated Press.

I just saw one video clip that showed the disgruntled Journalist apparently yelling “you dog”(translated) after he threw the shoes.

It is one of the biggest insults to hit someone with the bottom of a shoe and/or to call them a dog. That guy had good aim, Bush is lucky he ducked.

What I find funny is that the guy had time to throw the 2nd shoe.
What if it had been a grenade.
Where was the Security?
Were they waiting to see if the first shoe exploded?

I’m the last person on the planet who will defend Bush, but the incident gave our lame duck some small credibility. The journalist would not have hurled a shoe at Saddam, and citizens would not have been allowed to protest in support of the journalist under Saddam. Weird incident.

I am interested in why “dog” is considered an insult. I know rabies has been (is?) a problem in the Middle East, and perhaps dogs are disdained as a result. I also know that dogs are used by some sheep herders in the region, so surely those hard-working, smart dogs have a better standing with their humans.
