The journalist would not have hurled a shoe at Saddam, and citizens would not have been allowed to protest in support of the journalist under Saddam. Weird incident. I am interested in why "dog" is considered an insult. I know rabies has been (is?) a problem in the Middle East, and perhaps dogs are disdained as a result. I also know that dogs are used by some sheep herders in the region, so surely those hard-working, smart dogs have a better standing with their humans.
