Vick dog appears on today’s “Ellen” show
A trainer from Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah will appear on today’s Ellen Degeneres Show with one of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s dofighting operation.
John Garcia, from Fredonia, Ariz., will appear with Georgia, one of 22 pit bulls sent to the sanctuary after being rescued from Vick’s dog fighting operation in Virginia, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Vick, the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for his part in a dogfighting conspiracy. He and three co-defendants raised and trained pit bulls for fighting. Poor-performing dogs were executed.

The long arm of the law grabs handfuls of …
We’ve reported on this before, but, given our previous post, and seeing as it has made the New York Times, it bears repeating: A city near Tel Aviv is logging information about the DNA of local dogs — by collecting their poop.
The idea is that, in the future, they will be able to analyze unscooped poop, track down the owners and hit them with a fine.
It all got started when the mayor of Petah Tikva called veterinarian Tika Bar-On, the city’s director of veterinary services, and asked if it was possible to use DNA fingerprinting to identify which dogs pooped on his city streets without picking up after them.
As a result, Bar-On introduced the first-ever CSI: Dog poop unit.
Bar-On recruited 12-year-olds from a local grade school to go door to door, persuading dog owners to donate samples, to get the registry started. She’s also managed to get saliva samples from dogs at festivals. And she’s arranging to have her poop squad analyze properly disposed of poop, so that responsible pet owners can get rewards — another incentive for them to register.
To date, the Israeli dog DNA bank contains more than 100 samples. According to Bar-On, about 90 percent of owners agree to donate samples when asked.
The other 10 percent, apparently, are saying no shit. Or spit.

Dog poop helps convict rapist in Texas
Down in Dumas, Texas a rapist was sentenced to three life terms — don’t be surprised, we told you it was Texas — after a jury heard that dog feces on his shirt matched the DNA of the woman’s dog.
Rufus Sito Nanez III, 34, a former meatpacker, was convicted by a Moore County jury on Wednesday of the aggravated sexual assault of a 27-year-old Dumas woman last year, who he attacked in her back yard.
Prosecutors presented DNA evidence from the woman, too, but said the dog DNA bolstered the case, according to an Associated Press report.
Fecal matter on Nanez’s shirt, feces from the woman’s yard and saliva from her dog were sent to a veterinary genetics lab in California for testing. DNA does not exist in fecal matter, but cells containing DNA from the walls of colons attach themselves to waste material, prosecutor David Green said Friday.
According to testimony, Nanez waited for the woman’s husband to leave before breaking into their home and attacking her. The rape occurred in the back yard after she tried to fight him off.
The life sentences were triggered by Nanez’s criminal history, which includes convictions for felony burglary of a habitation and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to Texas Department of Criminal Justice records.

BARCS cuts adoption fees for rest of year
Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is lowering its adoption fees for the rest of December, and will waive it entirely for animals two years old and older.
The move comes amid a surplus of abandoned dogs and cats — many of them dropped off by families facing financial difficulties.
“We’re being inundated with healthy, adoptable animals,” said BARCS executive director Jennifer Mead-Brause told the Baltimore Sun. “We have people driving up in U-Hauls, dropping off their pets. It’s heartbreaking.”
On top of that, the economic downturn has resulted in fewer people showing up to adopt.
For pups and kittens six months and younger, the fee will continue to be the usual $65, which includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, and preventatives. For animals aged 7 months up to 2 years, the fee hs been dropped to $10, and for animals under two, there will be no fee at all.
The reduced fees are in effect from Dec. 13 through Dec. 31.
To see the animals now at BARCS, you can visit BARCS Petfinder page, or visit in person, at 301 Stockholm St. Shelter Hours are Monday to Friday, 12:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
