I wonder, if we looked at the city's rankings by "unregistered" breeds, like by their dog license, what would be the most popular? I see a lot of pit bulls, and pit mixes, and mutts- most of whom are rescues. To me that is the mark of a compassionate city.

It's strange, because I find the Beagle to be the universal icebreaker, especially among men. No matter where we are walking, we're bound to be stopped by someone who says, "That's a Beagle, isn't it? My granddad (or dad) had one of these (or a pack of these) back in the country in (North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia). He used to hunt with them. I always loved them when I was a boy." These interactions transcend any racial or economic differences, and they're always pleasant. There's a pat and a kind word for the dog, a smile and a reminiscence for us humans. I can only conclude that half of Baltimore's granddaddy had a Beagle or two.
