Baxter the therapy dog passes away
Baxter the therapy dog, who we featured here last week, passed away Friday.
The news was broken on Facebook, where Baxter has his own page, in a message sent to members of The Baxter Bussey fan club :
“Baxter, the world’s best and oldest therapy dog, 19 years and 6 months, eased peacefully from his life on Friday afternoon, October 16th, 2009 … The sweetest angel. … We love you Baxter, and many hugs to his family…”
Baxter worked with hospice patients, bringing them comfort and love at the end of their lives His story was published in a book, “Moments with Baxter” all proceeds from which are being donated to animal and hospice charities.

And now I am crying AGAIN in my office! But what a great legacy this dog leaves. And over 19 years old!….If only we could get all of our dogs to live such a life. Thanks for bringing us this story.

Baxter was an amazing dog. As are all dogs who do this work (See Elise and Diana’s book, home page). Love your site. Really nice, really clean, well-written … and somebody actually knows how to spell. Thank you!!

I just found out about Baxter’s death. The video I saw of him tending to patients in hospice care was the dearest thing I’ve ever seen. God bless him. I know he’s in heaven.

What a wonderful dog. Over here in the UK (up in the north ) we have only just been made aware of his fantastic achievements. So sorry to hear of his death.

I’m so sorry to hear this, though glad that his passing was peaceful and easy. I know his humans must be grieving terribly. I hope they’ll be comforted in remembering how many lives he touched and how many people he helped.
