I'd love to know who came up with this lamebrained idea. There are a lot of Catholics out there (well, there are a lot of Christians in general) to be offended by this. It stands to reason that they have a lot of companion animals, and that you'd want them on your side in any sort of animal-welfare campaign you were working on. I don't much like it, and I'm supposed to be disgustingly liberal. Why would PETA deliberately choose to alienate any interest group--religious, political, or other? Animal welfare is one area where people can (and probably do) unite regardless of their political, religious, or other beliefs.

It's just one more reason to wonder what they're really up to at PETA. Apparently enlisting lots of supporters isn't it. While I think Mr. Donohue's statement about pet stores is a bit flawed, he does have a point: No pet store is actively offending potential customers. So why is PETA actively offending potential supporters?
