Animal control officer fired for dumping dogs

acofficerAn animal control officer in Mississippi has been fired amid allegations he shot more than 100 dogs he was supposed to bring to a shelter and instead dumped their bodies in a creek.

Alonzo Esco was fired by the city of Canton during an executive session Tuesday night, WAPT-TV in Jackson reported.

The investigation began when a resident attempted to adopt a dog  that Esco had picked up in her neighborhood in November.

“I called the animal rescue league to see if they would hold him for me, but they informed me that Alonzo Esco had not been there that day, nor had he been there for several months,” the resident, Debbie Young, said.

She contacted Canton police, who referred the case to Madison County District Attorney Michael Guest. Esco, however, has not been charged with any crime, and county and city officials don’t officials don’t come across in news reports as sounding too outraged. There are no felony charges for animal cruelty in Mississippi, although animal-rights activists are pushing lawmakers to change the law.

“Some of those animals may have been killed, or discarded without following the rules and procedures set forth,” Guest said. “In researching the issue, it appears the killing of a dog is a crime, but it’s a misdemeanor.”

“There are no criminal charges that have been filed or anything like that that I’m aware of,” Canton Police Chief Vicky McNeill said. “Our investigation did not call for any form of arrest.”

Maybe somebody should.

The only reason Alonzo Esco had this job as animal control officer is because his cousin is Mayor Fred Esco of Canton, MS. Alonzo Esco was “let go” by the Canton City Fire Dept for stealing. Instead of terminating Esco, he was “demoted” to animal control officer where he was the sole employee for 3 solid years. There is reason to believe that the dogs and cats were sold by Esco as bait since Canton, MS is one of the largest dog fighting cities in MS. Canton official have cleaned up the creeks and dumps by bagging dogs and getting rid of the evidence, hoping this will all be forgotten.

March 1, 2010 Update–It was announced over the weekend that no criminal charges will be filed against Alonzo Esco for this. The Police Chief said she will not authorize any of her officers to file the affidavits needed for an arrest warrant because “no one actually saw Esco do the crimes.” The District Attorney says officers don’t have to “see” the crime being committed in order to file the affidavits for an arrest warrant. But w/o the affidavits, Esco can’t be arrested. Spread the word and bring national outrage down on Canton, MS NOW!!!

Canton MS ex animal control officer Alonzo Esco won’t be charged for shooting over 100 dogs/cats and dumping their bodies in creeks and woods in MS for over 3 yrs. There is also suspicion that Esco sold the dogs as bait since Canton, MS is on of the largest dog fighting cities in MS. Canton Police Chief Vickie McNeill, however, said she will not authorize her investigator to file the paperwork because no one saw any crimes occurring.

This is an atrocity that an animal control officer killed over 100 dogs is allowed to walk free w/out any punishment for this crime!

Alonzo Esco, the animal control officer who shot and killed over 200 dogs in his care and dumped their bodies in creeks will serve NO TIME IN JAIL for animal cruelty!! Absolutely sickening!!!

And for the record, he killed over 200 dogs, not 100. The bodies/bags of dogs were moved and destroyed by the city of Canton to protect Esco when it was discovered that Esco killed all these dogs. Alonzo Esco is related to a former mayor of Canton Frank or Fred Esco.

That is just an unbelievable story, how could that judge say there is nothing wrong with what Alonzo did to all those dogs! He killed 100 dogs and then dumped them in a creek, and no bodies gonna do anything about it! This is sickening! Alonzo killed 100 dogs and some of them could of belonged to a family who loved their dogs and now its gone. That judge doesn’t deserve a job like that if he/she thinks that what Alonzo did isn’t wrong and just ignore it! Alonzo you need to be punished severally!

200! I thought it was 100. Well then Alonzo you should be shoot and then dumped in a creek, lets see how you’d like it. Well we wouldn’t know because he would be dead but you get what i mean…… i hope. Anyways, Alonzo you need to pay, and hopefully you will someday when someone finally realizes that the thing you did is inhumane, cruel, wrong, sickening, and etc. If not then maybe it will be me who puts a stop to you Alonzo. You deserve every bit of cruel punishment you receive throughout your whole life.

Dear Jon,
I have a question for you. How do you know all this stuff? Do you live exactly where the unfortunate incident happened? If I lived there i would go out and tell the world that Alonzo Esco didn’t kill just 100 he killed 200. I would go out and tell the reporters, get it all over the news so everyone knows that this little town is trying to cover up what Alonzo did, and so he may get the punishment he deserves, and so the Mayor and judge of the town, ( who pushed this aside, because they were related to him or close friends ) may also be punished for hiding up all evidence. Sorry if this offends anyone in particular.
