Miss Jan, you caused me to paws and think a bit with your post.

I was initially assuming that Champ was an expensive, highly-trained watchdog guarding a wealthy mansion. But it doesn't really say that anywhere, does it? Is he discarded guardian of callous wealthy people who have used him and abandoned him? Or is there a family somewhere who would do anything to have him back, having been torn from him by cruel economic conditions?

We've seen a lot of heart-wrenching stories here on ohmidog! about people who could not afford to meet certain standards of care for their dogs. And if that's true for Champ's family (and we don't know for sure), we've moved one step more towards viewing dog ownership as a privilege for the rich.

It always bothers me when a news report says the owners "declined" to give an animal vet care. Does anyone ever bother while playing the blame game to consider maybe the owners do not HAVE the money for this? This revives the concept oft argued on blogs and in forums as to whether only rich people should have animals - then at least it is clear they have a CHOICE whether they pay or not! I asked a vet friend of mine about what this kind of medical care would cost and I was told "easily into the 15K to 20K with after care." How many of use BE HONEST just how many of us no matter how much we might want to pay out simply could NOT pay out this kind of money - and this was a Pacific Northwest vet estimate, it is MUCH higher in LA. I for one would like to know if it is a situation where the owners simpy don't have the financial resources to do this and - vets being vets and not telling what they may or may not know, and not everyone knowing how to go about it - maybe the idea of outside resources simply hasn't been offered to the owners.

It is JUST like the media smugly reporting that "people have given up looking for jobs" and are thus "discouraged workers" after six months if still unemployed they have "given up looking for work." This type of reporting is twisted, political, unethical, immoral and smacks of gullibly sucking down anything that an official organization wants to offer to fulfill its own agenda.
