Don’t mess in Texas

Not unlike the one we showed you in North Carolina — Texas has some ridiculous designated dog areas at its highway rest stops, too, like this one we encountered while driving down I-10.

Call it the cage of poop — almost totally unshaded, lined with large hunks of rock that can’t feel good on the paws, and about the size of a prison cell.

What better way to let your dog unwind from being cramped in the car than to stick him in a cramped, brutally hot, rock-lined, chain link-surrounded pen?

Wake up, highway departments. Our dogs, generally speaking, are traveling with us on vacation, not serving time. If you’re seeking tourists with pets, show a little respect for them as opposed to providing an Attica-like experience.

I’ve been thinking about this. Dogs who aren’t regularly cared for by the vet can have a variety of worms and other ugly parasites and diseases. I guess there’s no way to guarantee that dogs using the rest areas are all being properly cared for. The gravel may be a misguided sanitation effort. It seems to me that it would be just as easy to clean and maintain an area of grass. Even soft sand would be preferable. It’s interesting that the two dog rest areas you’ve shown appear to be cleaner than many human rest rooms I’ve encountered on interstates.

The cage of poop. Oye. That’s borders on cruelty.

Seems quite a few dog owners neglect to stoop and scoop at roadside rest stops. It’s no wonder non-dog owners find these sandbox creations acceptable.

I’m guessing this doggie potty area was designed by a cat person. Looks like a giant litterbox, but with rocks instead of sand! LOL!
