Roadside Encounters: Jake

Name: Jake

Breed: Golden retriever

Age: 2

Encountered: Sitting in the back of a pickup truck, outside the Paradise Cafe in Port Orford, Oregon.

Backstory: We spotted Jake, patiently waiting in the rain for his master, when we pulled in for some breakfast at the Paradise Cafe. I snapped a quick picture and went inside, taking a seat at the counter — as it turned out, right next to Jake’s owner.

It was a homey little eatery, where regulars have their own coffee cups, lined up on a shelf, and, rather than numerous individual conversations, there’s just one big one, between staff and customers, from table to table. Someone at the counter might say something, and then someone three tables away would chime in. It’s a small town thing.

Jake’s a fine dog, his owner told me while finishing off his breakfast — and not as old as he looks. He had to have his face shaved so he could be stitched up a few weeks ago after he fell out the back of the moving truck.

Despite that, Jake still rides in the back of the truck.

His owner told me that he named Jake after the dog in the song, “Feed Jake,” by the Pirates of the Mississippi.

“It’s a cool song, it’s got bums and hookers and everything,” he said.

I had only a vague recollection of the song, so I looked it up on YouTube:

“….still rides in the back of the truck?” Outright animal abuse (or worse). If he were in my area, he just might find his dog kidnapped one day and actually cared for.

A$$HOLE is the word that comes to mind to label this guy. What’s wrong with people. If I had been unlucky enought to ran across this guy it would have probably been my last stop for a while because what I would have done would have landed me in the county jail. Poor little boy. Lets try sticking that guy in the back of the pickup for a while in the rain and see how he fairs?

I know Jake’s owner and he is a wonderful owner. When Jake fell out of the truck, it was a freak accident. Don’t judge when you do not know the compete story.

OOOOH!! Why is that poor animal still allowed to ride in the back? It’s not safe and something bad already happened to the poor guy! I never allow my dog in the back of our truck, nor is she allowed to stick her head out the window.

Hmmm…Trying not to judge. Glad that Jake’s okay, but I’m sure he wishes he wasn’t waiting in the rain 🙁

A “wonderful” dog person would never drive with a dog in the back of a pickup, unless they were just plain stupid. No freak to that, it was an accident waiting to happen. There are many stupid dog owners. Poor Jake.
