Mother cat set on fire in Baltimore

In yet another case of animal abuse in Baltimore, a teenager doused a young female cat with lighter fluid and set her on fire.

The cat, and the kittens she recently gave birth to, were taken to Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) after police responded to a call in the 3300 block Saint Ambrose Street.

The cat, who has been nicknamed Mittens at the shelter, is suffering from burns on most of her body.

Witnesses told police that, earlier this month, a juvenile placed the cat in a milk crate on the back porch, doused the milk crate and the cat with lighter fluid and then struck a match and threw it in the crate.

In flames, the cat broke free from the milk crate and ran from the yard, running in circles until the fire was extinguished, BARCS said. She then returned home and hid under a table.

Police have not reported whether any arrests were made at the residence, which they said still smelled of singed skin when they arrived.

The cat and her kittens are residing in “Critter Care” at BARCS. Mittens has third and fourth degree burns. She is expected to survive, but will need long term treatment.  It will be months before she is healed and her fur may not grow back

“This is another horrible case of animal abuse in Baltimore City, ” said Jennifer Brause, BARCS’ Executive Director. “Mittens is a wonderful cat, who despite her injuries is still caring for her kittens and is very affectionate to the staff.”

Mittens’ medical bills will be covered by BARCS’ Franky Fund, a fund that relies on donations from the public to pay the veterinarian and medical bills of injured animals that come to the shelter for care.

Donations to the Franky Fund are accepted through the BARCS website, or at the shelter, located at 301 Stockholm Street in South Baltimore (near M&T Bank Stadium).

What a terribly sad story. Where were this kids parents and WHY haven’t they laid charges? People who think it is OK to abuse the defenseless make me sick. Poor Kitty, we’re going to make a donation to help him 🙁

Less than a year ago Mango – a one year old calico was doused with lighter fluid in Merced, CA and died at Best Friends in Kanab Utah after being treated for her wounds. The crime took place in Merced California and this hero delimanj@cityofmerced.org
– a policeman – tracked down the monster who killed this house pet “to get back at someone who didn’t “respect” him.”) Deliman found him through his cellphone. Abusers love to brag and I suspect Mittens abuser has already regaled his loser friends with this ugly story. May I suggest you contact him and ask how he brought this creature to justice. Please also contact ALLEYCATALLIES in Bethesda – a group I support for help in finding help in this situation.

Please keep me updated – once I get the bills done I will send Mittens a donation. I am in Los Angeles or I would be at your facility withthis mother and her babies. If you call either Deliman or Allies – mention my name
God bless the Mittens family. And feel free to share my letter with local press. Mr. Lighter Fluid – people are looking for you and soon you will be caught. Keep looking over your shoulder.

I feel that someone who does something like this should have the same thing done to them but a little at a time! ! ! It should be just enough to make them start to suffer & stop for a little while then do it over & over a few times to let them see how it feels!! This poor cat was a defenseless loving cat who just wanted a good home & someone to take care of hew & her babies! If they didn’t want her then they could have brought her in to the shelter & turned her in or taken her to another shelter! WHY HASN”T THIS PERSON BEEN AT LEAST CHARGED WITH CRUELTY TO ANIMALS????? That’s the least that should’ve been done so far! I have had numerous animals that we have helped that were strays, nursed them badk to health, got them good homes & everyone of them have done GREAT! Please help these animals get better treatment & the “TORCHER” that did this to Mittens get tougher charges & consecuenses!!!

This is one of the worst cases of animal torture I have seen in a long time. What do we need to do to get people to understand these are living breathing beings that deserve love and compassion, not being tortured and used for the amusement of some sick little bastard child who will probably grow up to be a child molester or serial killer. I hope mittens and her kittens survive this ordeal. I would love to adopt her but I have already rescued six unwanted cats. Good luck mittens and I’ll be sure to make a donation as soon as finances permit!

Has he yet been arrested? What are the animal cruelty laws in this state? It is sickening. My heart goes out. I too will be donating. Children and animals are helpless. This needs to stop.

Someone needs to keep an eye on the kid who did this. Don’t most serial killers start out with animals? It’s horrible what happened to Mittens – and I’m glad she’s going to recover – but I’m just as worried about the child who started it.

Very sad … there is no mention of whether the TEENAGER has been arrested. If someone knows it is a teenager, then someone will know his/her name. The teenager should be arrested and parents made to pay all medical bills.

This type of behavior is an abomination! How could anyone do this to a beautiful animal?! It breaks my heart to see such things and I hope that this kid who did this to her and her babies gets locked away for a VERY long time!! May God do to him what he did to a defenseless, loving creature.

it is too easy for them to get away with these crimes, and where the hell are the parents!
we will allow this, in our great country, until they do this to a baby, or a school friend, and then the nation will cry out for justice.
there is little justice for ALL lives in America. we have to change that, and it does start at home!

I agree with Sharon. The child who did this is mentally ill, by upbringing or genetic. This child must be taken into custody and put on the psyche.

until stricter laws are enacted for animal abuse cases, this is never going to stop! Any person, be it a minor or an adult, needs to be punished for a crime like this. An eye for an eye would be appropriate.

More has to be done. It needs to start in the schools. Parents just are not getting the message out to respect all forms of life.

What a shame. We need harsher laws and an isolated island where we can ship these jerks off to so they are not a part of our society. SOCIOPATH!!!

Sounds like RAD (Reactive Attachment disorder) in the teens who did this to Mittens.

I’ve read on Care2 site and donated too.
God Bless Mittens and her total recovery.

Anyone who wilfully harms a cat should receive capital punishment, no plea bargains, no exceptions. These devils have crossed a line beyond which there is no redemption. This is far worse than similiar atrocities committed on humans, because cats are far more innocent, blameless, and unconditionally loving and loyal. Societies need to enact laws designed to deal once and for all with these worst of all criminals, and then DEAL with them. Prayers for this sweet little family — as a burn survivor myself, I KNOW how painful it is and I only pray there is nothing but love and comfort ahead for them and for EVERY cat and kitten.

When is the world going to stop breeding people who are just the pits of the earth. This is an absolute disgrace. A little cat this time, will it be a child next time. Go away and ask yourselves, is the person who did this human. I know my answer.

Instead of a RAD diagnosis, I’d prefer to see some “R”a “D” iation “B”urns applied to the person who committed the crime!!! I don’t care WHY they did it, only that they DID it and should be PUNISHED!!!

Stories like this make me want to do very bad things to humans like him! He is not worthy of living in this world. He is lucky I don’t know who he is because I am a defender of vigilant acts. May karma kick his coldhearted ass one day.

I live between Baltimore and D.C, and I am familiar with the area this took place. It is a pretty rundown part of town.

Whoever does this to a poor, defenseless animal who only wants to love and be loved by an owner and find a safe, cozy home for her and her kittens, is just plain evil. A sadistic child like this is more than likely to upgrade to displaying the same sadistic behavior with human targets. Rape, aggravated assault, torture, murder…it’s unfathomable to me how a person can obtain pleasure by seeing a cat on fire and hearing it scream.

How can a human beings mind be wired to obtain pleasure from seeing such destruction to an innocent life? I believe it’s honestly Satan’s whispers that convince the weak-minded to do so.

This story is three years old, otherwise I would go and cover all of Mitten’s expenses and offer to adopt her and her kittens when she has been fully rehabilitated. I already have two sister cats but I’ll see if they have any cats presently there that have been in a similar situation recently that needs the same help.

The person who posted “karma” what goes around comes around? Are you totally absured or have you never lived?

Bad people get away with the most horrid behavior and many are not in any way punished for yhe harm they inflict.

ARREST that bad kid and throw the book at it!!! Yes – punish IT – that teen is not worthy of inclusion among humans.

That teen will grow up to become an abusive adult – get that THING off our public streets.
