Two teens charged in burning of “Mittens”

Baltimore police said Monday that two 17-year-old boys have been charged with multiple accounts of animal cruelty in connection with using lighter fluid to set a cat named Mittens on fire in Baltimore’s Central Park Heights neighborhood.

The owner of the cat, who lives on the 3300 block of St. Ambrose Ave.,  told police that the animal had been set on fire by her grandson and a friend.

A witness told police that the suspects brought the cat onto a rear, second-floor deck three weeks ago and and put a milk crate on top of the pet. They then poured lighter fluid through the openings in the crate and dropped a book of lit matches into the crate, police said.

Police said the cat howled, knocked the milk crate over and leapt from the balcony, running in circles until the flames went out.

Mittens recently had three kittens, and continues to nurse them in her new surroundings — at Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS), where she is expected to survive her injuries.

Mittens’ ears were damaged as a result of the burns. She also sustained third- and fourth-degree burns on her back and side, according to BARCS.

I hope those 17 year old boys are punished. What a horrible thing to do.

How stupid to charge these two idiots in juvenile court instead of adult court. They are old enough to know that it is cruel to do this to an animal and where are the parents in all of this? They should also be held accountable for this hideous crime. Animals are living and breathing creatures just like us humans are and they also have feelings just like we do. I hope you stupid idiots get a taste of your own medicine, throw them in a crate and set them on fire!

WE CAN NOT EXCEPT THIS. IT REALLY MAKES ME THINK WHAT KIND OF PERSON THE ARRESTING OFFICER IS REALLY LIKE. JUVENILE CHARGES FOR TWO 17 YEAR OLD MALES. WHO TORCHURED WITH FIRE WITH THE INTENT TO KILL A DEFENCELESS ANIMAL. BALTIMORE WE CANNOT EXCEPT THIS. I,m REALLY STARTING TO THINK BALTIMORE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OUR ANIMALS WHICH IS ACTUALLY NOT CAREING OF THE SAFETY OF THE PEOPLE.WHY DO THEY NOT LISTEN AND MAKE ANIMAL ABUSE DESERVING OF MUCH HARDER PUNISHMENT. THE ABUSE OF ANIMALS IN BALTIMORE IS NATION WIDE WHY DON,T YOU SEND THIS NATION WIDE.

once again we have two lower then low-lifes setting fire to an innocent cat. What did Mittens do to deserve this. NOTHING. These guys are 17 year olds, they were completelt aware of their actions and their intents. Bullshit trying them as juveniles. Their crime was not juvenile. Try them in adult court-make them pay for their crimes. Baltimore City is the way it is because the court system sucks. I say enough is enough-I’d love to douse them in lighter fluid and set them ablaze…
