Owner of dog that was dumped down trash chute charged with neglect, abandonment

A 28-year-old Newark woman has been charged with four counts of animal cruelty in the case of Patrick, a 1-year-old pit bull who was found almost starved to death after he was dumped down a garbage chute in a high-rise apartment building.

Kisha Curtis was charged Friday with two counts of abandonment and two counts of failure to provide proper sustenance, New Jersey SPCA officials said.

The dog was discovered by maintenance workers March 16 inside a garbage bin at Garden Spires, a 550-unit apartment building. Staff at the Associated Humane Societies/Popcorn Park called it one of the worst cases of cruelty they’ve ever seen.

Matthew Stanton, a spokesman for the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told FoxNews.com that Curtis, the alleged owner, faces two criminal counts and two civil counts, which he said could result in up to six months in jail or a $1,000 fine and community service if convicted.

Stanton said Curtis told authorities she was unable to take care of the dog anymore, but she denied throwing the dog into the chute at the 22-story apartment building. The New Jersey SPCA is investigating whether anyone else was involved in the abuse and disposal of the animal.

Patrick, meanwhile, is slowly recovering at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls. Staff there say he is now standing and eating small amounts of food several times a day, though he remains pathetically thin.

AHS, which is paying for Patrick’s continuing care, is continuing to post daily updates on his condition. Most recently, they’ve reported that an ultrasound test found a foreign body lodged found inside the dog, and they speculated he may have swallowed something to quell the hunger that he was experiencing.

AHS also arranged to have Patrick interviewed by an animal communicator, who reported he told her, among other things, “I am broken, I don’t know why.”

WTF…So find someone who can take care of the dog! What is wrong with people??!! This poor creature almost died and still could. He’s not strong enough to survive a surgery to remove a foreign object that he probably ate because he had no food. So Sad! Good luck Patrick and God bless all those who are working so hard to save you.

“…up to six months in jail OR a $1,000 fine and community service if convicted.”
Neither sufficient, nor commensurate with the positively heinous nature of this case. This kind of ‘punishment’ is precisely why abject cruelty like this will continue in America.
“Curtis told authorities she was unable to take care of the dog anymore” Anymore?! Like she ever did in the first place?! WEAK! In the extreme!
What I will never understand is why, if someone doesn’t have the wherewithal to properly care for an animal in their charge, they don’t simply surrender it to a proper shelter. Has the entire country become both cruel and STUPID overnight?
God help us all.

Saying that she “wasn’t able to care the animal anymore” is such a ridiculous pos excuse. Really???!!! Really??!! Did you have to wait until the animal was in your mind dead before you realized “Oh my god I haven’t fed or cared for this living being for months!” What a pathetic excuse for a human being. What is even more pathetic… There are Thousands more just like her and there are even more than that many animals out there that need rescuing from these ignorant people. Praying for you Patrick that you can heal and get strong enough to get the surgery you need and be adopted into a wonderful forever home.

I feel an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Kisha Curtis should be starved and dumped down a garbage shoot from 22 stories above. She should NEVER be aloud to own an animal EVER again!!! It is a privlege to have pets and she does NOT deserve that privlege. I bet she has not missed a meal herself … check her out on Facebook I did. She has to meet her maker someday and explain her actions. Poor excuse for a human being!!!!

@Smoketoomuch Sadly there are hundreds of stories like this if you visit dog shelters, it is just a big puzzle how much cruelty they can inflict on poor animals.

@Chris – Unfortunately, I am all too aware of the scope of this kind of tragedy today. The solution, in my mind at least, is MUCH stiffer penalties – say, 2 years in prison AND a $5000.00 fine followed by 2 years probation and community service, PLUS a minimum 10 year ban on pet ownership. It should also be more difficult (more stringent requirements) to get a pet in the first place. Of course, EDUCATION might also help, in the schools of course, but primarily at home.
Is any of this going to happen? Highly unlikely. So we’ll continue to read, hear, and see these kinds of stories in the future. We’ve made it too easy to ignore “personal responsibility” in this country, and it may be our downfall as a society.

OK, so we are all outraged. What a sick individual. What judge can we all write to make certain this person is charged to the max?

Where is her photo? Where is the rest of the story…where she works and where she lives? If she was a car theif suspect or a pick pocket suspect or any type of suspect the paper would have published a photo and more information on her…”Jane Doe, a 32 year old bus driver, from 132nd street was questioned concerning…” Why does even the press protect animal abusers?

This is the first time I have ever been to this website and from this point on it will be my last. WHY? A major sponsor, or is it owner?, of this website CLONES DOGS!?! Really. I am supposed to think this website has passion for animals yet is takes money from a company that takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to clone a pet. There are MILLIONS of pets that will get the needle, gas, or a 22 in back of their head because no one will adopt them. But-this site is shilling for a CLONING company!! Do these idiots that pay for cloning have no idea how many sick and unviable puppies have and will die before they get the perfect take of the clone? ADOPT you heartless freaks. You past dog was good. But your future dogs will also be good if you treat them with the same mix of love and care. SHAMEFUL OHMIDOG. SHAMEFUL. Posting stories like Patrick’s will get the suckers like me to your website, but CLONING will make me leave.

Not being able to care for an animal anymore means you find someone else that can – not starving it almost to death and then disposing of it like a piece of trash… I hope this person is prosecuted to the full extent of the law and banned from ever owning an animal again. For anyone that is reading this and is moved to want to do something. I know the centre looking after Patrick is collecting for his care, I have sent some money because it is the only thing I can do from overseas, be great if everyone else put a little something down for the little guy so AHS can continue to attempt to address some of the terrible things that are being done everyday to defenceless creatures that have no voice and other than the AHS no advocates…

As soon as I saw Patrick story, I donated $50.00 to his care. I can’t understand anyone doing this to any animal. I prayed that they find the monster who did this. That person has been found and is facing $1000.00 fine and 6 months in jail? She should be made to pay for all of his medical expenses and prison time. I believe in an eye for an eye and really believe this monster should be starved to near death, placed in a garbage bag and thrown down a garbage shoot. How could she stand by and watch him starve, watch as he turned into a skeleton of a dog and throw him away with the trash. Patrick, who will not even do his business in his cage and waits to go outside. I have followed his progress and would like to thank all who helped this poor soul with the sad eyes and love to give. Please charge the monster to the highest degree of the law. She should also be sterilized that she can never have children or never own another animal.

The author of this website is the author of a book about dog cloning. The ad at the top of the website links to the website for the book. Had you clicked on it, you would know that the book is an investigation into the practice, and quite the opposite of an endorsement of it.

@Fran – Next time, why don’t you LOOK before you leap? No one here, especially the author of this site, condones dog cloning, he merely wrote a book exploring the subject. One click and a lousy three minutes of your time would have told you as much. Please climb down from that high horse of yours and get a clue.

Oh what poor Patrick went through. I hope and pray he can be strong enough to get through surgery to have that foreign object removed, and then begin to gain weight and heal. And find a forever home. So many obstacles. But I believe in a happy ending.

I’ve got to think that there are angels out there who are already lined up to adopt Patrick when he is well enough. Do we know this for sure?

What are they doing about the foreign body they found inside him. I..I..I just want to kill that woman!@!!

I can’t believe that people have such disregard for life that they would take it out on a defenseless animal. Why not just give him up to the SPCA–my Scottiem Mac and my rescue cat Kitty send hugs and kisses to Patrick and hope he gets well soon!

I’m willing to bet that the “owner” Kisha Curtis isn’t starving & emaciated. Just give me five minutes with that disgusting excuse for a human being. I’ll make her wish she had half of what poor Patrick endured. I cannot fathom how a person on this earth could look into the trusting eyes of a dog and willingly abuse it. If we don’t change the laws and have much more severe fines & punishment it’s never going to end. Hang in there, Patrick. There’s a lot of love coming to you, and you deserve it!

Please get better Patrick, then you won’t be broken any more. If I lived in USA I would be trying with every ounce of my being to be the lucky person who gives you a home. You’d be cuddled forever and a day and NEVER be afraid again. I don’t know you dear little dog, but I know I love you and I always will. I also know that I hate with all my heart and soul the vile, monstrous poor excuse for a human being who left you to die. I am not a violent person, but I could quite happily inflict violence on her. I hope she dies a terrible death. Grow stronger every day Patrick. xxx

Kisha Curtis please come to Tennessee. I am so sure that you would be more than welcome. I mean, all the southern hospitality you would receive. I would respectfully ask the judge in your animal cruelty case to forego any jail sentence, fine etc and instead let you spend one evening, down by the river with a few friends of mine and of course their pet dogs. Oh, and don’t forget your swimming attire. You’ll have such a good time. Almost as good of time as your little puppy did while in your care.

(KISHA CURTIS) Noun. Mamal, resembling a human but exhibiting behavior more closely to that of Hominoidea. Mobility, upright, rudimentary speech, possessing the intelligence to know right from wrong but chooses wrong to facilitate its own self-interest which include but not limited to extreme acts of cruelty, devious behavior, attempts to hide wrong doing. Complete lack of empathy toward others of its species as well as lower animal life. Most notable for its attempts to integrate into civilized human groups but is very quickly discovered as it cannot comprehend civility . Natural environment: Steel cage.

I have never seen anything so pathetic before in my life! Not being able to care for him anymore is an excuse not a reason. She should get about 5 years in prison, like what is 18 months? I wish people could realize what these poor creatures have to go through. Make pet owners responsible!
