Patrick: A video update

Here’s a video update posted by the Newark Star-Ledger yesterday on Patrick — the starved, abused and discarded pit bull who has captured America’s heart.

Two weeks have passed since Patrick was rescued — minutes before the bin he was in was headed to the trash compactor — after being tossed down a garbage chute in a high-rise Newark apartment building.

Caregivers at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls say Patrick continues to improve, but an ultrasound shows that he has an object lodged in his stomach.

Once he gains a little more weight, vets will perform an endoscopy to remove whatever might be lodged inside him.

The Associated Humane Society of Newark, which has official custody of Patrick, will determine who adopts Patrick once he is completely healed. Thousands across the country have expressed interest.

Kisha Curtis, who has been identified as the dog’s owner, has been charged with two counts of abandonment and two counts of failure to provide proper sustenance, according New Jersey SPCA officials. The charges — two criminal counts and two civil counts — carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail or a $1,000 fine and community service.

Curtis told police that she couldn’t take care of Patrick anymore, but she denies responsibility for tossing the 1 year-old dog down the apartment garbage chute.

Truly the “Windows of the Soul”… Not yet smiling, but with a whole new (tentatively positive) outlook on his life. Can’t wait to see him at 40 or 50 pounds.

I’m so glad he’s doing better. I’m a little worried about any internal problems he may have from the starvation and hope every day he makes it and has a healthy life with a loving forever home.

It is amazing any dog treated like that could ever trust a human.

Patrick is a great poster boy for a breed that is much maligned and misunderstood.

With the sad things happening around the world, we have this dog who is being saved by good people. It gives an insipiration to all that good things do happen and hopefully Patrick will soon be in a good loving home where he belongs.

Remember that the Garden State Vet deserves the credit for Patrick’s recovery. They are declining any more donations, saying they have plenty.

Of course Patrick will find a good loving home that he so deserves. Unlike almost all the other “pit bulls” AHS takes in.. they have a very high kill rate and aren’t very cooperative with local rescuers, according to my NJ friends

A maximum penalty of six months in jail or a $1,000 fine and community service. Are we serious?? Since when is it okay to treat another living creature in this fashion – i am disgusted and saddened at the same time. The message being sent out with this less than adequate sentence is appalling and basically is giving people the right to do what the hell they want. I wonder if the lovely kisha would like to be thrown down a shoot and treated with such cruelty. I think our laws have to toughen up and do so quickly to put a stop to this terrible treatment to animals.

I’m so very happy to see him doing so well. His eyes go right to my heart. On my “psa” side, BARCS does get dogs like Patrick on a regular basis. They can always use your help and donations in assisting starved, neglected, and abused animals right in your backyard.

I pray for Patrick’s full recovery daily. I have 2 rescue dogs myself (#3 &#4) and my life is fuller because of them. I hope that Patrick’s owner is never allowed to own another pet in her life. I wish only the best for Patrick and for his new owner.

So glad he is better day by day but I didn’t like the picture of the cages behind. Is this friendly for the animals?

What can we do to make “Kisha’s” punishment worse? If you treated a child this way, starved and thrown down a trash chute, it would be treated as attempted murder. How could a human being watch day by day as this poor sweet dog starved. I’m sure she ate in front of him too. There are no words of how disgusted I am in the trash that is Kisha.

Kisha is trach and has no soul what-so-ever! She should be treated exactly the way she treated Patrick, then sent to prison and have to clean the poop out of the cages for the Animal Rescue Society for the next 10 years while she watches the animals eat as she is starved, tied outside in the snow, then thrown in the trash been.

Thank God for the maintenance worker finding Patrick when he did and Thank God for the wonderful people at the Garden State Vet’s office who have given Patrick not only the medical treatment he has received but also shown him that not all humans are monsters like the one he was so unfortunate to be placed with.

I agree with all of these postings here and hate to dwell on the evil demon that did this, but this kind of human being makes one want to bring back public hangings, maybe even with the entrails hanging out……… I’m so glad precious little Patrick found good people to care for him. Thank the Lord for the maintenane worker and all the wonderful doctors and caregivers at Garden State Vet Clinic. His beautiful eyes tell all!

I am with kate, The penalty is WAAAAY to lax !! It’s election year Folks !! E mail your Congressman.. Mayor,, Cheif of Police etc… anyone running for Office.. We need much stiffer penalties,, I would propose 5 years in jail.. on a working farm preferably–Dr Lic revoked for the same period. Be put in a data base as an offender just like molesters.. Surely there is something better than what the piss poor excuse for a human “kisha”,.. HMMMM wonder if she would fit in the shute ?? If not we can always starve her , then try again! I don’t usuall react to stuff like this, but thos pictures saddened me as well as made my Southern blood boil over !!!
