PETA deems Angel’s Gate a “hellhole”

(WARNING: The contents of this video are disturbing.)

Angel’s Gate – an animal sanctuary you may have seen Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray sing the praises of — bills itself as a non-profit organization that cares for disabled, abused and abandoned animals, providing them a place to live out their years in dignity and comfort while receiving holistic treatment and spiritual support.

PETA — hold the harp music — calls it “a chaotic hellhole.”

The hospice and rehabilitation center in Delhi, New York — founded and operated by Susan Marino — takes in “special needs animals” from all over the U.S., and provides for them through donations from the public. Marino promises both donors and people who send her animals that animals will “live out their days in peace, dignity and love.”

PETA says photos and video from its investigation show “Angel’s Gate was a chaotic hellhole where animals whose conditions required special, individualized, round-the-clock care were deprived of basic necessities and quality of life.”

PETA’s undercover investigator, posing as a volunteer, documented paralyzed animals dragging themselves until they developed bleeding wounds; animals kept in the same diaper for up to two days until they suffered urine scald; dehydrated animals denied access to water; animals confined to crates, bathrooms, cribs and a bathtub; animals denied treatment for pain, seizures, tumors, open wounds, respiratory infections, eye infections, ear infections, and mouth, gum and skin infections; and crowded conditions so stressful that fights broke out daily.

Despite claiming to provide “hospice care” and “rehabilitation” to hundreds of animals, Angel’s Gate does not have a veterinarian on staff and most animals were denied veterinary care for a variety of ailments, from simple to terminal, PETA reports.

Among the investigator’s findings:

  • An elderly Chihuahua named Malcolm, sent there from Animal Care and Control in Brooklyn, suffered for about two weeks before he finally died — anemic, lethargic, thin, dehydrated, and unable to balance, walk, or even eat.
  • Medications that had been prescribed for Shifty, a bulldog suffering from seizures, and Tucker, a dog with hydrocephalus, was untouched almost a week after a veterinarian had dispensed them.
  • A miniature horse named Mimi was denied veterinary care for respiratory distress for days before she finally died. More than four months after Mimi’s death, Marino still solicited sponsorship donations for Mimi’s care on the Angel’s Gate website.

Angel’s Gate, like any facility that houses the sick, terminally ill and handicapped — be they dogs or humans — is bound to have messy moments and daily disasters. But the investigator’s video goes a long way toward documenting that, whatever love Angel’s Gate may, as it promises, be providing, ”peace and dignity” are far from ever-present.

Some of PETA’s findings may have been judgment calls: “Horribly suffering animals on death’s door were deprived of the dignity and relief of euthanasia.”

Others clearly were not: “The bodies of dead animals were left out for days among live animals. Animals were fed rancid, raw meat that had been left unrefrigerated.”

PETA says that in 2004, the IRS listed Angel’s Gate as an organization that failed to establish its status as a public charity, and in 2010, it was listed by the IRS as being at risk of having its charity status revoked.

Marino, PETA points out, has been featured positively on national TV, prompting public donations — one lottery winner apparently sent $50,000 — and what PETA says is the “false impression” that Angel’s Gate is a good place for animals.

PETA has turned over evidence gathered by its investigator to Delaware County District Attorney Richard Northrup Jr., and it is asking its members and others to urge his office to file animal cruelty charges against Marino.

I hope all or any of these poor babies can make it to Rolling Dog Ranch — the real deal for animal hospice. Couldn’t bring myself to watch video.

Pets should open up their wallets and give this organization support to correct these issues.

This story has hit close to home for me as I have sent them a small amount EVERY month for the last two years. To say I’m pissed is the ultimate understatement. I’m not a huge fan of PETA so when I saw this I emailed them directly to ask for a response that have NOT responded at all. I’m guess that is not a good sign! The donation has stopped and I’m dealing with the guilt of having helped them.

First Wayne Pacelle and all the noise about the HSUS executive retirement fund, then the “Animal Rights” vs. “Animal Welfare” arguments, followed by all of the “Patrick’s Law” hoopla on Facebook, and now this. Who do you trust? It’s getting harder and harder for those of us who just want to help protect the animals to tell the good guys from the bad guys.
Somebody stop this handbasket, I wanna get out.

I was a volunteer there for 3 years and I never saw anything that PETA is stating. They do have a vet on staff too, that’s not correct. I haven’t been with Angel’s Gate since they moved, so I don’t know what’s going on now, but I can tell you that Sue LOVES those animals and she would never harm them purposely. She lives with them night and day, so I can’t believe that dead animals were laying out for days. I find a lot of this very hard to believe. She also has very little for herself, so if donations were being solicited for Mimi after her death, it was probably because no one updated her page (she also has no time) and not because she’s trying to scam anyone. I’m just saying…

A hospice is a place where sick and dying pets are. The appearance of sick animals in a hospice is a given. The fact is that some illnesses are not curable. I realize that PETA has a “better off dead” bias by the fact that they run one of the highest kill-rate shelters in the country.

The same video is complaining that there are loose dogs who sometimes get into fights and dogs in cribs who are circling because of the boredom of containment. Are they saying that the loose dogs should be caged and the caged dogs should be loose? Or are they saying that they should all be dead because the place is not perfect.

I don’t know that I can believe that seeing animals who are sick in a facility for sick animals is serious evidence of abuse. Maybe the place is terrible, but I would need a more believable witness than someone from PETA to be convinced. This wouldn’t be the first time PETA had selectively edited footage to make someone look bad.

I too, spent time with Susan Marino at Angel’s Gate on Long Island, before they moved up to Delhi, and found her to be the most caring and commited human being. She lived 24/7 for these animals, and they were clean and very well cared for. I’m having a hard time believing any of this.

Thank you “Dubious” for you comments. As a long-time friend of Sue’s I cannot believe that PETA is attacking Angel’s Gate!!! After all that she went thru on Long Island and the hardship of the move, to be viciously attacked by an organization that spends millions on lobbying politicians and nothing to feed or nurse abused animals back to health is a crime. Peta is the one that should be investigated. It is one thing to devastate the dog show world by having it’s HSUS cronies planted in Dog Warden positions in PA to confiscate and neuter valuable show dogs before their breeders and or owners have a chance to prove that they are innocent of abuse/neglect. And to add insult to injury, the shelters then “adopt” out these confiscated dogs for very high fees (isn’t that like selling them?). Look at the PETA videos of AG–what a beautiful job of selective editing–taking things out of context to further their agenda. Really look at those videos–do you see feces? matted dogs? dirty linens? Do they even realize the time and energy it takes to keep sick/dying animals clean and fed and watered–and most of all loved to their last breath? No, Peta would not have a clue–they just lobby our govt. officials and attack the innocent animal lovers, breeders, rescuers. IT IS SHAMEFUL. They are claiming deceit on the part of Sue and Angel’s Gate–what about PETA’s deceit of the entire country? Pretending to really care about the animals while they are only promoting their warped ideas that NO ONE SHOULD OWN A DOG OR A CAT. That’s right. All of you who contribute to Peta and HSUS are only hastening the day when your grandchildren (or maybe even children) will never know the joy, happiness and well being that the companionship of a dog can bring to a human. Wake up animal lovers–it is not hard to research the facts for yourself and find out what PETA and HSUS do with your contributions. Do not condem Sue Marino and Angel’s Gate and the many volunteers who literally give blood, sweat and tears in tending to these animals to try to make their last days on earth more comfortable.

Susan has a good heart, but she is a horder. She cannot give the animals the attention they need and deserve.
You have to question things like letting dead animals sit around for days for their “souls” to depart… a bit scary???

Before you jump on the PETA bandwagon because of a few biased video clips, just think hard about what you recently watched.
Remember that things aren’t pretty in a hospice and that animals with a variety of ailments will not ever appear to be in a perfect state.
I personally witnessed Susan rescue and cure many animals that otherwise would have died. The only thing she may be guilty of is biting off a bit more than she can chew (in regards to the amount of animals at Angel’s Gate) but that does not warrant hatred and death threats.
Susan takes care of animals that nobody wants. Some might be better off put to sleep but there are many others who have been rehabilitated and that’s a result of Susan and her work at Angel’s Gate.
Please investigate this for yourself and think for yourself before you condemn this very dedicated woman.

First of all, I’ve contacted PETA and received immediate responses so I’m not sure who Diane McCormack contacted. I can’t say the same for the Humane Society. Secondly people hate PETA because they’re not a cutesy, feel good group. Their goal is to end animal suffering, bottom line. Sometimes that means having to euthanize. Sometimes it means exposing those that we think are doing the right thing but aren’t. I’m so thankful for PETA. They do the dirty work in the fight for animal rights.

Sorry for the second comment, but I feel I must add this. Our animal companions should not be sent away because they become old and maybe difficult to be around. They gave us a lifetime of joy and friendship. It’s up to us to see they end their days with the those they love. It’s hard to see an animal get old and harder still to put him or her to sleep, but it’s our final obligation as a pet owner.

My dog is at Angel’s Gate and has been so for about 18 months… his name is Hoover and he is a rescue dachshund I adopted after someone left him in a box in Spanish Harlem. I received an email from a PETA investigator indicating that if I was someone who has an animal that has “…suffered under Marino’s care and for the thousands of people who have been deceived into supporting AG” , I should contact this investigator. On the surface, how could I argue with the video I had just seen? Again, on the surface.

A bit of background…. Hoover, my other dog Dash, and I had such great times playing in the backyard of my house for about a year, then one day Hoover’s legs gave out and he was paralyzed in his back legs. I made the difficult & expensive decision to have him operated on, and then committed myself to undertake a rehab program for Hoover. For about 6 months, I had to pee him manually every day and it was a lot of work trying to manage rehab. and get him in and out of his wheelchair.
Did I make the right decision? I can’t say for certain… it wasn’t black & white, but I do know he was every bit as feisty and spirited and seemingly happy as before he became immobile. Ultimately, I could no longer care for Hoover myself as I travel out of the country for extended periods and finding him someone to express him daily isn’t the easiest. The dilemma was that he seemed every bit as alive and happy as he ever was…

Enter Susan at Angel’s Gate. I was using a holistic veterinarian who was aware of Angel’s Gate and who miraculously was only 2 towns over. He had heard these wonderful things about AG and the dedication of Susan Marino to care for animals that some, like perhaps PETA, think should be discarded for the animals own well being. Perhaps PETA is right, perhaps they are wrong… I can’t say for certain. But neither can they…perhaps there isn’t a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ decision here… there are decisions that with best intentions just lead to a different outcome. To me, it seems just arrogant and broadbrushed to presume that PETA’s way is the right way. To me, PETA should be the last group wishing to be painted with a broad brush to where their entire body of work is smeared…

Anyway, at the time I was about to bring Hoover to AG, they were in the process of moving to Delhi, NY on 40 acres of land so Susan could continue what she considers this important ‘life’s work’ that few others would consider doing. With my friend Lori, we drove about 5 hrs. with Hoover to Delhi to meet with Susan. My impressions….what an incredible person, what an incredible facility, and importantly, what an incredible place for Hoover to be … wow, I felt Hoover had truly lucked out.
Lori & I talked with Susan for perhaps 2 hours and I could just sense there was something special about Susan and how devoted she was to these animals… she can’t be away long enough to even take a vacation, she seemed to know each and every animal and their story… and the 1st time we were there the place was spotless. Susan’s exhuberance and excitement having the new housing built for all these animals was just so apparent and heartfelt… no doubt in my mind.

Well one year later Lori & I went back to Angel’s Gate to see how Hoover was doing. The place and many buildings were completed (all buildings are air conditioned & heated for the animals), the rehab pool with water treadmill was about to be built, and many of the paralyzed dogs (perhaps 15 or so) were inside this very clean room in the main house… most were out, but some were in a crate during the time I was there. And Hoover was as spirited as ever, and seemingly just fit in with all the others. Yes, he slept in a crib at night and occasionally was in his crib during the day… Susan told me Hoover’s ‘sport’ was stealing chew toys from the other dogs.

I looked at his back legs that he dragged along the ground when he wasn’t using his wheelchair and it looked scabbed and calloused and I raised my concern to Lori. She said, yes that leg does look a bit ‘off’, but look how robust and healthy he looks in his upper body and face. Well I asked Susan about the seeming ‘bad leg’. She explained that with paralyzed dogs they like them to drag their legs inside the house or on the grass so that they develop a tougher calloused area so it wouldn’t bother them when not in the wheelchair. Seemed logical to me.

I remember leaving Angel’s Gate that visit and remarking to Lori that this place is like Shangri-la for animals…how lucky for Hoover. You know, just speaking with Susan for all that time, I trust my gut and don’t for a minute doubt the love and feeling Susan has for her ‘family’ of pets. Perhaps she is understaffed, I’m not certain….perhaps the size of the undertaking she has chosen is overly daunting… I can’t say for sure. But for someone whose entire life’s work is predicated upon selfless caring for those ‘less than’ animals and then have her reputation totally trashed and reading posts from others that she should be in jail, is just so, so unfair.

One more thing… if you or I had an agenda to make a case against a place, it would be easy to be able to put together statements and even video to support my position. These are animals that are infirmed and in need and Susan doesn’t try to make it like an ICU, but rather to integrate the animal’s life to be as close to ‘normal’ as it can be. .. and that dog that just goes around in circles….well Lori reminded me that Susan explained to her that she took that dog in at about 1 yr. old after it was dropped on it’s head and suffered neurological damage.

Finally, I welcome the investigation by the state regardless of its outcome…it’s in the animal’s best interests. Personally, I am confident that Susan will be found to be doing the best she can for the animal’s best interests. But for PETA to pass judgment & blast their ‘conviction’ of Susan without her being able to present her side of the story, seems mean spirited to me. Why not wait to see what the determination is first before dragging someone’s name thru the mud. And if they find that the charges by PETA are trumped up to make PETA’s case, like the accused politician once said “It’s great to be found innocent, but where do I go to get my reputation back?”

I think that “investigators” there for months should be able to put together a more accurate video. You cannot take months of footage and turn it into a 5 minute video. Nothing on here about Angel’s gate is true, the place is amazing and for people who don’t believe in euthanasia like all you PETA supporters, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS! So really, it’s people like you creating all this “hell.” It’s lies and I hope no one else listens to this.

PETA – why do you feel that some animals are better off dead? I have a special need’s child that some feel has no quality of life – Well she does and so do these animals. I visited Angel’s Gate unannounced, and was impressed with what I witnessed. Perhaps you should give support instead of doing stupid things like making up ugly mcdonald’s boxes to scare kids. Stop throwing paint at fur coats and stop looking for free publicity. You are the ones who do not care about animals!

I have been a long-time supporter of Angel’s Gate since the 1st time seen on Oprah & her show does their homework before “tooting” about the generous & loving work that is done by Angel’s Gate! Susan, in my opinion, does more for these precious & sometimes “unwanted” animals than I have seen before! PETA has always seemed to me a very radical “voice” for animals! And it is not uncommon for tapes to be edited to get their main objective to the public!?? I agree with statement made by Angels Gate—”Hope there comes a day when animal care & rights groups start working with, & not against, each other. We all have a common goal…” Exactly—animal orgs need to prove they are capable to handle the specific care needed–in this case, hospice groups & place where animals can be loved & cared for as best as can be done, considering no one else wants them! Instead of fining & huge court costs, I would rather donation $$ go to rescue group & not Lawyers!! Kuddos to Angels Gate. Work together for a common cause. I will continue to support Angel’s Gate with donations. I find the statements from those who have actually volunteered there or who have to give over their beloved pet to Angel’s Gate to receive the specialty care needed! Thank You AG for your love & compassion!

PETA picks a prominent enemy, and picks a fight with them to get publicity. Is there anyone who mistakes this as an attack on Angel’s Gate? This is an attack on Oprah Winfrey and Rachel Ray. Putting out a video on Susan Marino doesn’t get the juices flowing and the contributions rolling in… But if PETA has to fight the likes of Winfrey and Ray? Well, shucks, here comes the money from the ignorant rubes.

There’s one born every minute.

My whole family volunteered at Angel’s Gate until they left for better quarters. My 7 year old daughter cried for a little while the first time, and then set up what she called a “petting station.” This was when you just sat down and called to the animals. They came over and snuggled, happy, content, fulfilled.

Yes, it’s ugly. Yes, it’s sad. Yes, the animals are in various levels of distress. But that’s life for the abused, the forgotten, the neglected.

The job of Angel’s Gate is to take in these damaged, sick animals and give them a better quality of LIFE than they would get anywhere else.

This Angel’s Gate does. I say Angel’s Gate, not Susan Marino, because it’s not just Susan. Yes, she is the driving force; it wouldn’t exist without her – but does anyone actually think that so many people would volunteer time after time after time in a house of horrors?

We own a cat adopted from Angel’s Gate, an “unadoptable” animal. He spent the first six years of his life in cage after cage, shelter after shelter, until he found his way to Angel’s Gate. Now he sits on my lap every morning and night (Has to be lifted up there, but that’s sort of the point, isn’t it?) and purrs loud enough to be heard from other rooms. PETA would have destroyed this animal. Angel’s Gate rescued, succored, and rehabilitated him, and now he fills my house with shed fur and love. (For all of you LI volunteers, remember Red? Three legs, shaggy? He’s still ticking and happy.)

Never did we see abuse of ANY kind. We saw piteous case after piteous case; the beagle who was rescued from his owner after he paralyzed it with a baseball bat, happily dragging his way back and forth across the room to be pet. The two cats who could only move their heads and their front paws; we would put them together in a basket when we arrived, where they would nuzzle each other in happiness. The greyhound rescued from the racing industry who was so abused that he didn’t know HOW to show love – but when he wanted it, he would walk over to you and just lean on you. That’s what he wanted. Tactile touch, the feel of companionship that he had never gotten before he arrived.

Let’s talk about PETA for a moment. I have personal knowledge of them stretching back over thirty years. My father, a geneticist who works on fish, was accosted outside his lab, located in a prominent school, and showed a picture of a monkey with screws being pressed into his head. My father asked what this was, and he was told that the “wicked” scientists in that “devil’s house of worship” were torturing these monkeys. My father asked who the scientist was, and received his name back in return.

He never worked on monkeys. Ever. Second of all, the feverish PETA member who was protesting the “wicked” scientist didn’t even recognize him.

I was holding my father’s hand at the time, and this wild-eyed crazy scared the crap out of me. Remember that these fanatics care nothing about facts. They have a preconceived notion about the world, and if you’re not abolishing science and rolling back the world to this idyllic and fanciful time when we frolicked with the bunnies and were all vegans, sweeping the ground in front of us to prevent us from stepping on insects… you’re against them, and they have no qualms about lying, cheating, and stealing to make their point.

I own many animals, and wouldn’t go on like this if I didn’t A) believe that Susan and Angel’s Gate does wonderful work, and B) despise PETA for what they do.

Without my father’s work, just as one isolated example, three certain kinds of cancer would still ravage children and teenagers. What is more important, an estimated 350 deaths and 1,200 cases of chemotherapy for children aged 5-13 a YEAR, or making PETA happy?

Always remember that PETA LIES. They subscribe to Hitler’s saying, “Any lie will be accepted if it is big enough.”

Finally, one comment directed to Ken Lipson, who commented above. You are 100% right, the state’s investigation will find nothing but compassion for the lost and abandoned – but it will suck a ton of money from the hospice, money that would go to PROVIDING for these animals. PETA know this, and doesn’t care, because the ends justify the means.

When are we going to realize that ANY fanatic, no matter on what issue, by definition is myopic? Stop supporting PETA, and send your money to a reputable animal rights organization. You can guess who I support, but it’s your money. Just don’t get taken in by the headline grabbing deceit of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Feh.

It is very sad to see the suffering of the animals. May be angel’s Gate needs many more volunteers. It is hard enough to take care of a healthy animal or a sick human being. It is certainy not easy to take care of all sick animals. It would be nice if PETA could join hands and give Angel Gate a hand to improve the situation. This is a case of good intentions gone way off course. I did see dogs dragging themselves , bleeding & all the carts ect…were in a building. The “new” location is isolated ..there are NO voluteers there on a reg basis. She was alone with hundreds of animals from 5 pm till 8am when the paid help showed up. It is NOT HUMANLY POSSIBLE to care for that many animals properly, I dont care HOW hard you try …let alone special needs animals. This is a great concept …but it would require an ARMY to do this the right way. IMO the money she gets for is very poorly used …. Also, I am going to see if there is a way to email Oprah’s company and ask them if they would consider following up on AG. I am such an animal lover. I became a vegetarian 4 years ago and gave up wearing leather, wool, and NEVER considered fur anyway. I donate to the ASPCA and HSUS monthly and to PETA and other organizations occassionally. I just figure that whatever good comes out of it is a plus.Whenever I see any kind of abuse to any species of animal in any situation….my heart bleeds. It brings me to tears. They are helpless and have no voice. How I wish animal abuse would end. Realistically though, if humans cannot be merciful with eachother, how can they be merciful towards animals. I will never stop praying though.

They are a disgrace Peta and I really truly hope when it goes to court she wins a lot of money to finish building the nice shelters she started to make on her huge property upstate. They are disgusting attention getting groups that are against many things people do with animals, such as no kill shelters. From this video you cannot really make a judgement call. I will say that on AGs website they say they care for about 400 animals in a 6 bedroom house. That sounds like overcrowding. The dogfights would be a concern. But the video of the animals circling is not due to stress. They obviously have neurologic conditions. Bottomline someone should investigate and see what the outcome is.

The Delaware County, New York, District Attorney’s Office has filed charges of cruelty to animals as well as a drug-related charge against Susan Marino, the woman responsible for the horrific suffering of hundreds of animals at Angel’s Gate, Inc., which she founded, operates, and dares to call “a hospice and rehabilitation center.”

To all of you have supported this woman, here is your HARD evidence! She IS a monster and unfortunately has some of your once loved companions… She is not only cruel to animals but also has some addiction problems. Oprah has already pulled her support and you should too!

PETA has no credibility. I have worked at a pet hospice/shelter in Texas and yes, it can appear unsavory when animals are approaching their end. Go visit terminal cancer patients and see what hell they’re living through, it’s HOSPICE! I never heard of Angel’s Gate before today and I can only hope a thorough investigation by credible (not PETA) authorities is initiated. If the accusations are false then PETA should be charged and sued. HSUS and PETA do nothing for animals. They do support some very hefty salaries which is why they probably want a piece of AG’s pie. Donate to your LOCAL animal RESCUE groups. SPCA’s, “shelters” and the like kill animals. Rescue groups DON’T!

It amazes me how any animal lover can attack an organization who has done so much good for animals like PETA has. They are not perfect, but which one of us is? You all probably don’t give a shit about any other animal other than companion animals. Do you still eat meat? Do you care where that comes from? Do you still wear leather and fur? Please don’t condemn while you live in a glass house. I would rather support a group like PETA than be a passive person who only bitches about things but does nothing. Also, to those of you who “gave up” your companion animal – you should have never been given the privilege to have them in your lives in the first place. You just don’t give them up. Abandon them. Compassion is a shallow dish for some people. Same goes with people. I have worked with special needs children and adults and have seen parents and family who barely visit if at all, children who suffer from horrible seizures and who are kept alive by artificial measures. Incredibly selfish if you ask me. I would want no parts of being alive if that was my reality. We impart our beliefs upon those people instead of being compassionate and giving them an ultimate release from a life that really is not a life. Grow up. Also, Kevin, please check facts before you post. PETA’s employees do not, by any means have hefty salaries. Over 85% of what they raise goes to helping with animal causes. If you check, that put them as a 4 star charity in charity navigator. Pretty awesome if you ask me. I am also part of my local rescue group and have seen some of the “hoarders” who keep their rescues in cages pretty much all of the time. How would you like that? The more I see, the more I think that both sides have problems. One thing for certain, if you only talk the talk, please keep your viewpoints to yourself. Once you walk the walk, then you can speak intelligently. Animals need any and all the help they can get. Just give your compassionate help. Just my educated take on things.

Shannen, being charged with a crime is NOT at all “hard eveidence” or even any kind of evidence that any crime whatsoever actually occured. Do remember that in the USA people enjoy a presumption of innocence; also remember its very easy to indict someone when a grand jury gets only one side of the picture. Also remember that PETA is not known for its unbiased testimony either; they are pretty radical in animal extremist “rights” position. And yes, PETA kills most animals they recieve, even cute fluffy kittens and puppy dogs.

WELL WHAT is PETA doing to HELP ANgels GATE? PETA HAS LOTS OF MONEY they can surely spare some to HELP this woman and the animals!!!! After all PETA does NOT rescue animals they EUTHANIZE any animals in their care. THEY (PETA) have NO shelter, videocontent can be selective also BUT surely this womans needs help! PETA doesn’t ever HELP animals. They just want to euthanize them all so that no one can own one. They criticize everyone, help no animals at all, and if they had their way, we would all be vegan, like it or not.

My daughter and I would go to help out when Angel’s Gate was on Long Island.
Susan was one of the MOST caring and DOING person I know! I was AMAZED w/ALL she would do for the animals in her care! Among ALL the wonderful things she did for the animals under her care, she would use her pool to give the animals hydro-therapy. I saw miraculous results! She would ‘home’ cook the meals for the animals. Even with all the animals, her home and grounds were always clean! I NEVER understood why the neighbors on L.I. gave her such grief!
Now, Susan and Angel’s Gate NEED people to volunteer and HELP her and the animals OUT!!! I have trouble believing these horrible stories. I’d like to hear Susan’s side of these HORRIBLE stories!!! I would BELIEVE her! She IS an ANGEL!!!

Yes I am a supporter of Angels Gate and always will be. I wish this post could be removed completely from Angels Gate’s record. Yes, some bad things happened in the past. But you can bet your bottom dollar, that once the whistle has been blown, things begin to change. I cannot give up on Angels Gate itself for things taken out of context or because of the crimes of Susan Marino.

There is more good than bad that comes from a place like Angels Gate. The lives of every animal there are at stake if this place is ever shut down. Do people not realize that? DONATIONS MATTER. Even if you do not agree with what happened in the past.

The PETA video is drastic and was made to grab the attention of animal lovers everywhere, but at the same time it is rude (to me) to film a cat in it’s final moments of life and parade it around to break hearts. Susan Marino may be at fault for many of the allegations that are listed. BUT I HAVE NEVER KNOWN ANYONE TO WALK BY A DEAD CAT IN A BAG FOR THREE DAYS. HOW COULD THEY? Could you? An entire staff just happened to ignore this? No. It was used to hurt the hospice and to make people angry.

The faults of Susan are not the faults of Angels Gate itself. Her accepting donations from a dead animal are wrong, but with so many to care for, and all the paperwork, sometimes things get overlooked.

The staff of Angels Gate continually work hard and try their best to give their all to the animals. And in the past have even gone around Susan to get animals the care that they needed. And if Susan wants her reputation back, she has to work for it now. She has to be the best damn vet ever, or she has failed not only the animals in this video, but the lives of every bird, cat, horse, dog and duck that live in her care now. They are all depending on donations.

When Susan was trying to have Angels Gate built, it was just a large fancy house. And a lot of the injuries sustained were not because of neglect, but because of the unfinished environment they were living in.

Angels Gate is fully finished now. With buildings to accommodate for each animal issue or health problem. They have central heat and air conditioning. They have full doggy runs so the animals can be exercised. They have an underwater treadmill and pool for the animals to regain muscle control by aquatic therapy. They are never deprived of food or water. And if a health issue occurs it is addressed immediately.

Things have changed people! The worst catastrophes make the best improvements.

Are you sickened so much that would forsake every animal there that needs your help? You would take back donations that feed, buy medicine, and beds?

Court will rule the fate of Susan Marino, but right now every single creature there needs your hope and your charity.

Do not give up on Angels Gate itself!!

As president of the international, non-profit animal advocacy group Friends of Animals, and also president of Primarily Primates sanctuary in Texas, I toured Angel’s Gate yesterday, Feb. 20, 2012 for 2 1/2 hours. Overall, the 200 cats, and 75 dogs all appeared well-cared for, living in clean, attractive, well-lit areas. I was also most impressed with Angel Gate’s staff and hard work. The last thing this shelter needs is a hate campaign by a wealthy group that’s bent on destroying the shelter to boost PeTA’s ability to get headlines and attract attention to themselves.

When a shelter has been subjected to a smear campaign by a group that opposes sanctuaries, and chooses to kill thousands of cats and dogs each year under the guise of preventing suffering, their views on a ~last chance~ hospice shelter are irrelevant to us. PeTA’s president once told reporters that everything PeTA does is a publicity gimmick — and that includes the photos and videos they generate to cut an image for themselves at the expense of animals and those who refuse to be bullied by PeTA.

PeTA has no credibility to be making allegations, nor are they caring for adoptable or unadoptable animals.

Here’s truth for you. PETA does not save any animals. They want to kill all house hold pets. They believe that there should not be any house hold pets at ALL!! No cats, no Dogs, Hamsters or Guinea Pigs. I am an ex-PETA member & when I found out what they were doing I left. Oh, and guess what? Most of the donations go to Admin and activist traveling cost not to SAVE the animals!!

This is another branch of the infamous dog breeders’ ‘NoKill” agendists at work.

They have infiltrated Peta now I guess.

All you have to do is Google “animal control shelter director fired resigned quit allegations” to see how the NKers operate – same MO in every city and state. They aren’t being too covert about their agenda either – I guess they take the real animal welfare groups for idiots. They are, thank GOD, being exposed for who and what they are doing.

Utter non-sense. This person went there like a health inspector nit picking. I have been there quite a few times and I was THRILLED there was a place like this. My mother took care of sick animals and when she died no “shelter” would take them without killing them.

PETA kills animals. They feel like putting animals to death is better than them being cooped up. I almost feel like they would rather see your healthy animal dead rather than live as your pet. Because that’s not how nature intended it. I’m not sure how they feel about adopted pets in good homes, but it is known that they kill adoptable pets regularly…

• PETA Killed a Near Record-Breaking 95 Percent of Adoptable Dogs and Cats in its Care During 2011
• Since 1998, a total of 27,751 pets have died at the hands of PETA workers.

As far as “rancid” meat. I’ve met the owner and it’s HEALTHY for animals to eat raw meat AS NATURE INTENDED. Lots of animal diseases come from eating commercial pet food that often contain feather meal, ground up euthanized pets from the vet with flea collars still on, meal from feces / intestines, and so on. Even if the meat was “rancid” or off, the animal has a nose and will chose to eat it or not. In nature there are no refrigerators.

My mother’s blind dog is there and cared for well. Please understand that PETA’s only term for “Ethical” is in the wild, (possibly) adopted, or DEAD.

I’m SURE isolated cases where injured animals struggle occur. If you want to make a place look bad you will find occurrences. And if you record them in bias you will succeed at blowing things out of proportion. I’m sure this PETA “volunteer” did not show any footage of happy animals loving life. And that does happen because I’ve seen it. I’ve driven up there when nobody knew I was arriving and all I could see is happy wagging tails. This place cares for a LOT of animals. These animals are HAPPY and want to LIVE.

God bless Angel’s Gate.

F U PETA, I can’t believe I used to hand out your material, never again. I like how you go after places like this and back off of companies like Gillette.

Be very careful, folks! PETA policy about disabled dogs is very, very clear… if PETA manages to win, they WILL KILL EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE DOGS! PETA is not what they pretend to be! Everything I have heard about Angel’s Gate says that the residents are extremely well cared for. PETA policy is that ALL HANDICAPPED animals should be killed.

i visited angels gate this week for the first time. all the animals were clean, well cared for and happy. all the animals i saw were adoptable – some walked funny, or were missing a limb, many were seniors so weren’t what most people would look for when looking for a pet. angels gate is a hospice where these animals can live out their lives in a warm, loving and comfortable environment. peta is way out of line.
PETA is a four letter word.

I am a huge supporter of Susan and AG. PETA is an awful organization of animal killers who do not care about ‘animals’. Susan is amazing, compassionate and loving. She has given a place for these animals no one wants and for PETA to turn around and take it away from the animals is appauling.

We too have walked it, it was clean, amazing and well cared for by all volunteers. It was a loving place for the animals.

Yes Susan was charged with drug possession.. she has drugs for the animals. She has to keep them on hand.

Our group gave Susan a cat that was in one of PETA’s videos. They claimed it was abused, in terrible condition and more. The cat was brought there for a skin condition, he was FIV and he was undergoing skin graphs (that Angels Gate paid for in order to help him). He was brought there as a known hospice. That cat was extremely well cared for by Susan. PETA totally lied about his condition.

I hope Susan can get through this and continue her amazing work!

PETA is the world’s largest killer of companion animals….with a multimillion dollar budget, and yet they “save” almost no animals. They “rescue” thousands, then kill them for all kinds of trumped up reasons….this entire thing is a sham….and the owner needs to get a good lawyer and sue those a..holes for their millions…if they get their hands on any of these animals they are toast….maybe already are…PETA needs to be euthanized….I repeat PETA KILLS animals….Don’t believe it? Take time and do some research on the THOUSANDS of documented cases of animals they kill every year…

Seriously? These allegations from the same folks who think pornography is a good way to promote animal welfare? The same group who is loony enough to declare the children’s video game “pokemon” promotes animal abuse (

Need more proof? Go file a Freedom of Information Act request in the state of VA. They operate a slaughterhouse/euthanasia clinic in the Norfolk VA area are under the guise of a “shelter”. Ms Nachminovich was herself investigated by the VA Dept of Ag wouldn’t you know….

Heck, PETA doesnt even meet its own published guidelines for a good animal shelter (

Anyone who thinks PETA has any credibility whatsoever to comment on animal cruelty or the proper medical care/rehab of special need hospice animals should get a reality check — FAST!

So while you all defended Angel’s Gate simply because you hate PETA so much, PETA investigated and found enough evidence for a cruelty conviction.
I do not and have never supported PETA financially, but I do know that Rick Berman is the propagandist for anti-PETA movement and that he represents the interest of puppy millers, so when I see something such as “ZOMG! PETA KILLS ANIMALS!” I take the time to look into it. PETA owns no shelters (a frequent piece of propaganda b.s.). However they do provide for the humane euthansia of animals in gassing (and worse) shelters. Thus the large number of animals “killed by PETA.” While you all would let the dogs die slowly over 10 to 20 minutes in terror by suffocation, simply to adhere to the principle of “no kill” (oh, the irony!), they are doing something to alleviate the suffering of the dogs in those final moments.

I actually saw this place, not all of it, but enough to know this was not a good place. I cannot believe the charges were dismissed!! I saved a dog from here and she ended up having very serious problems that could have been taken care of right from the beginning with some vigilance and vet visits she would have been fine. But now she will have certain medical issues for life. She is not nearly as bad as some of the animals I saw there though. Susan should not be able to have animals ever again!!

I’ve known Susan Marino since about 2000 or 2001. I had read about the hydrotherapy she offered for dogs. I brought my dog there for hydrotherapy, expecting to be charged several hundred dollars for a one-on-one session. Susan took Evy in the warm pool for at least 45 minutes. My dog was so relaxed she fell asleep in Susan’s arms. The fee was $75 or $85. We were invited to stay for a delicious home-cooked meal by Susan and Victor.
My sister and I visited Susan and Victor at Angel’s Gate many times. I’ve been out of touch for quite a while, as I had no money to contribute. Susan always said that her goal was “better, not bigger”. But fund-raising brought her to Oprah’s attention. The only fault I could find with Susan’s operation was that she couldn’t keep up with the demand.
Sick animals are sick. I never saw anyone at Angel’s Gate treat animals with anything less than love and respect. I wish I had known of this controvesary – I would have raised my voice. Who is taking care of the animals now?

PETA got its big start by lying about the conditions that they found at Edward Taub’s laboratory, that Alex Pacheco had set up. It has become worse since then because lying works for them and profits them.

There is no such thing as a PETA “investigator,” either. PETA is incapable of such things. PETA thinks that our animals are better off dead, so PETA is incapable.
