App-alling: A dogfighting app for your phone

A dogfighting game application called “Dog Wars,” in which players fight virtual dogs for virtual money, is being offered through Google’s Android Marketplace.

Developed by Kage Games, the downloadable game allows players to choose an identity, pick their dogs and feed, train and fight them, thereby gaining “cred” and making money.

The game is now available for free download. Players can purchase virtual “adrenaline pens,” from Android which can be used to “revive your dog during a fight or even bring it back to life.”

“Never let your dog go hungry or thirsty… you must train it and feed it a while before you can fight other player’s dogs … Building Cred puts money in your pocket and lets you earn more in fights,” the game description reads.

“Let’s get it on!”

Given its exceedingly bad taste, and how it perpetuates pit bull myths and glamorizes cruel and illegal activity, there are many who’d rather see the game taken off — the market, that is.

In a post on BSL News, (BSL standing for Breed Specific Legislation), readers are encouraged to flood both Google and Android with emails and complaints.

(Android is an open source operating system created by Google. While Google does not approve every app offered there, it does maintain a website where people can complain about objectionable content in games and apps. You can find it here.)

The makers sound more than a little defensive about the game.

“It is just a video game,” they say in the game description, as if anticipating some controversy. “Perhaps one day we will make gerbil wars or beta fish wars for people who can’t understand fantasy role play games …  Just because something is illegal in real life in certain countries, does not mean it is illegal to make a song, movie, or video game about it.”

It doesn’t mean it’s right, or smart, either.

What’s next, a game in which players compete to see how many children they can molest?

Sure, the folks who came up with “Dog Wars” have a right to market any sick game concept they want. But my advice? Zap that app.

Thanks for this post. I went to the Android site and posted my objection to the app there.

Well said, and are they planning a game about child molesting or murder down the road? Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

I encourage folks to write Android and implore them to remove this app. It promotes torture of dogs. I don’t care if “it is just an app.”

Please zap that ap. This sends the WRONG MESSAGE to young people.

The app isn’t made by Google, it’s made by a third party company. Complaints should be directed to Google though as they have the power to remove the app from the marketplace.

So, there are some inaccuracies in this article.

Firstly, Android is not a company owned by Google. It is an Open Source operating system created by Google. Being Open Source, unlike iOS, anyone can create an application and make it available through the Android Marketplace and all they need to do is adhere to the terms and conditions.

The idea that Google is aware of every application in the Android Marketplace is a little ludicrous. But there is a way to make the people who manage the marketplace aware that such an offensive and obscene application is available through their site.

I urge you to go here:

http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/request.py?contact_type=takedown

This is the method by which you can report inappropriate applications. I suspect if they get enough complaints, they’ll remove it from the marketplace. It doesn’t mean it won’t be available elsewhere (the developers are unapologetic) but we can make it unavailable in the #1 place to find Android applications.

Thanks, S. I believe the link you provide is the same one we provided. I will attempt to make it clear that the app is being offered through a Google created marketplace, as opposed to Android being a Google-owned company.

Did everyone of you complain to Rockstar Games about the Grand Theft Auto franchise of video games? How about any of the First Shooter games?

Considering all the ills of society, you’re going to complain about THIS sending the wrong message to young people? How about you, as parents, send the RIGHT message. That is how you counteract messages you don’t agree with.

Dog fighting on the same level as pedophilia and murder? Really?? People need to get a grip.

I have a grip. More times than I’d like to count it has been on a dead or crippled fighting dog discarded along my dark, lonely street. Dog fighting is indeed akin to other abusive power ploys like pedophilia and murder, in that someone disregards all other considerations to satisfying their own needs or appetites. The fact that all the other ills of society exist is hardly a reason not to act on the ones that actually confront us.

Shame on Google for promoting this hideous and disgusting, appeal to lowlife, immorality! Dog fighting is a real life inhumane “sport” engaged in by perverse, sociopaths. To encourage this as a game that young people see as fun is beyond unconscionable! Shame on you!

Only a very depraved individual would even consider downloading this app, that makes it all the worse. It reinforces this blood lust that some people have. I do agree child molestation, murder & incest will be next. I guess the gutter is the limit for GOOGLE!! ..

Well, they picked the RIGHT genre for a game to get their name out there…which I’m sure was their intention. I doubt they are for dog fighting….but like a good piece of media, sometimes the most controversial are the ones that get noticed….(being “safe” gets you NOWHERE). And, I don’t see anyone else complaining about games where you can kill other people. Only fighting dogs.

[Note: I am as against dog fighting as the next person, probably more so as I live in a city where it is VERY prevalent and our animal shelter does not put any pitbulls up for adoption, they get put to sleep if they are not claimed....which pisses me off to no end as I LOVE pitbulls. And I've been involved in rescue for many years...although I feel many ppl involed in rescue put animals higher than human beings...aka children and "life" in general, but that's just me.]

Did you see how the developer Tweeted that the game is “like real life” in that training the dog is better than injecting it with steroids?? I wrote about it here: http://gofetchgifts.com/blog/pet-news/google-allows-dog-fighting-app-on-android-market/

Been trying to think of this for days, and it took an article on MSNBC to finally remind me:

Apple’s operating system and app interface are proprietary, and they’re a lot stricter about what they allow to appear. They’ve quietly canned two genuinely awful apps–one representing a “shaken baby” (human), shaken until it dies; the other purporting to “cure” gay people. Neither of those two lasted very long in the App Store.

Google’s motto is “Don’t be evil.” I’m betting that after a bureaucratic process, they’ll decide that this app is pretty damned evil.

(Incidentally, the MSNBC article quotes Michael Vick as coming out against the app. Pretty interesting: http://digitallife.today.com/_news/2011/04/25/6525818-even-michael-vick-wants-google-to-dump-dog-fighting-app- )
