Sentencing tomorrow in Chamberlin’s case
A year after Chamberlin was found tied to a tree and abandoned in a backyard in North Carolina, his reputed former owners are scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow on animal cruelty charges.
Chamberlin, whose continuing recovery has been documented by the Guilford County Animal Shelter, had apparently spent two months shackled to a tree behind the home, which the owners had moved out of when they split up.
About two weeks after the dog was found by someone mowing the overgrown yard, Nellie Brock and Wilbert Morrison Jr. were arrested and charged with animal cruelty — a misdemeanor in North Carolina, though it has since been upgraded to a felony.
Chamberlin was too emaciated and weak to stand when he was found without food, water or shelter. A second dog found on the property was barely alive and had to be euthanized.
Chamberlin was taken in by the Guilford County Animal Shelter, where he’s undergone surgery for fused bones in his forelegs, gained weight and has made steady improvements.
Chamberlin’s neglect and heroic struggle to overcome it prompted a state senator to call for amending the state’s animal neglect laws.
Sen. Don Vaughan, a Greensboro Democrat, introduced what he dubbed Chamberlin’s law on the opening day of the General Assembly session.
The bill would allow criminal charges to be brought against pet owners who “recklessly” neglect their pets, as opposed to the current law, which allows just those accused of doing so “maliciously” or “intentionally” to be prosecuted.
Chamberlin, meanwhile, continues to become healthier and more mobile, and learned to get around with wheels.
The sentencing hearing is tomorrow, Wednesday, at 2:30 p.m., at the High Point Courthouse, 505 E. Green Drive, in High Point, N.C.
How much justice will be dispensed is uncertain, but there’s some justice in this:
Chamberlin will be there.

I think that is terrible what they did to this beautiful dog. They left him there to die… He need to get well and be adopted by someone who will love him and give him the beautiful life that he deserves. I hope they get the book thrown at them.. And I hope the dog gets an amazing home with loving people. Dianna

Thank DOG that Chamberlin is still alive, but I’m so sorry that the other dog had to be PTS. The laws need to change so that this type of neglect/abuse/other despicable behaviors by humans be majorly criminal, and that those who perpetrate such crimes, either knowing or unknowingly, be subject to maximum fines/imprisonment. ALL animals are sentient beings, including humans.

Who is the judge and prosecutor? I think we need to fax letters now so this trial does not end up like “No Justice for Rocco” in New Jersey. Rocco was neglected. He died in the cold, lying in the snow, starved and full of parasites alone. Judge Larsen’s sentence: Community Service & $250 fine. The Judge did not even order to remove the remaining animals from their care.

I am really so thankful to the people who have a hand in Chamberlain’s rescue. What you did was really something. I know there is hope for Chamberlain if he continue to be with you. And so, I pray and hope the same for all those who are still out there. Please, never cease helping them, they need you, and time is really running out for those still out there and in the shelters. Again, I thank all of you, and you know who you are, people I call and consider “heroes”. God bless

I hope these people get an appropriate sentence for what they did and that means serving jail time and paying a heavy fine! These are miserable people who have no heart or soul and it’s just too bad that these dogs were ever given to them in the first place! People need to be so careful about who they give animals to! This terrible neglect to the point of abuse and cruelty happens far too often because people don’t screen people, do background checks, and give pets away for free! People also need to spay and neuter their pets so there just isn’t so many of them that end up in the wrong hands! Thank God for the people who have hearts in this world as these people who rescued wonderful Chamberlain. And I hope that Chamberlain’s law will be passed. Every state should have this law. There’s far too much of this going on. Animal neglect such as this is terrible animal cruelty!

After all Chamberlain went through, animals are so amazing. May these people, if you can call them that, I can’t, pay the max for the abuse and the death of the other dog. They left these wonderful dogs to die. Sometimes I just hate people. Maybe this is why I like animals so much more than I do most people. May Chamberlain get the home he deserves.

These stories are so damn hard to watch but we must watch them, as we must never, ever become complacent or lose our resolve to stop fighting this crime. Thank you for sharing Chamberlin’s story.

It seems there is no end to the cruelty that people show when it comes to our animal friends. I cried through all 3 videos and I’m still not fully together. I hope that Chamberlin is there at the sentencing and the judge throws the book at them. They need prison time for this heinous act!!
