Community chips in for Doberman’s surgery

Zeus, the Doberman pinscher shot Monday night by a trespasser, underwent an operation yesterday as more than enough donations poured in to pay for his surgery.

Zeus was shot in the face after being let out into his backyard in Metairie, Louisiana.

“It’s unbelievable. People have been way more then generous, way more than expected,” said Heather Hilton, client services managers for Southeast Veterinary Specialists.

The bullet shattered part of Zeus’ jaw and lodged in the dog’s shoulder.

Zeus’ owner, Henry McCaskill, was trying to come up with the $3,419 required to perform the surgery, but concerned citizens began calling up the animal hospital to make donations after the dog’s story was publicized, the Times-Picayune reported.

The animal hospital said once the amount was reached, it had stopped accepting donations, but said names and numbers were being taken in case additional procedures become necessary.

I find it annoying to see so many people bashing the vet. Most vets I’ve ever known donate way more of their services than other professionals and cannot be realistically expected to donate to everyone. It is likely the vet’s office has a monthly donation amount and that amount was likely used up as it is the end of the month. I also noticed at least 50 people said something like, “If someone will start a chip-in, I’ll donate…” but not one person said “I will start a chip-in page… here’s the URL…”. Setting up a chip-in page would have taken much less effort than expecting a vet to donate a $3,000-$4,000 surgery. Whatever, I’m glad to see the dog has been taken care of and I hope the bad-mouthing of this vet has stopped. Good luck to Zeus… looks like an awesome dog!

I’m not mad at the vet for not covering the surgery costs, however there are other methods available that could have been done, such as extending a line of credit for them, allowing them to pay over time. Our vet did this for us when our dog got hit by a car. I think it’s slightly heartless to say ” We know this dog basically saved your life and we know he’s in terrible pain, but we won’t do nothing for you until you give us money”. Vets like this juts irk me.
