The dog who took an 11-mile ride stuck in the grill of a car has been reclaimed by her family.

On Tuesday evening, a family from Dighton family was reunited with Suzie, who had been missing for nearly two weeks.

Animal control officers had dubbed the dog Lucky after she was struck by a Toyota Camry Sept. 20, became wedged in its grill and was and transported 11 miles across Rhode Island before the driver stopped.

The dog’s journey ended when the driver stopped at the East Providence Police Department, where officers and animal control personnel removed her from the front of the car.

“Thing’s as happy as can be. It’s fine,” said the dog’s owner, who asked not to be identified. “My daughter loves the dog to death … she was wicked upset when we lost it and wicked happy when we found it,” he told the Taunton Daily Gazette.

A family pet for the past six years, Suzie escaped their enclosed yard in Dighton on Sept. 20 by digging under the fence.

“Dog digs like a backhoe,” the owner said.

The owners learned about Suzie’s story after her story of survival spread across the country on Monday and Tuesday.

“One of my buddies called me on the phone. He caught the 11 o’clock news on T.V., and he said, ‘Hey, I think your dog’s on T.V.’”

As medical marijuana grows in popularity, so too does the chance that the dog is going to get into it.

It’s always been something that happens – dogs have been chowing down on their owner’s illegal stashes for decades, sometimes with fatal results.

But with the increasing use of medical marijuana, dogs are more likely to both have access to it and be tempted by it. For one thing, it doesn’t have to be hidden anymore. It can be kept in higher quantities. And, increasingly, those taking it for medical reasons are eating it instead of smoking it.

As a result, instead of a well-hidden bag of green leafy buds, dogs must resist the temptation of such things as rice crispy marijuana treats, cannabis oreo cookie cake, medical snickerdoodles and ganja lasagna.

In Colorado, there has been a spike in the number of cases of dogs getting sick from cannabis since medical marijuana was legalized.

Vets say they used to see dogs who had ingested marijuana a few times a year. Now pet owners bring in doped-up dogs as many as five times a week, CBS4 in Denver reports.

“There are huge spikes in the frequency of marijuana ingestion in places where it’s become legal,” veterinarian Dr. Debbie Van Pelt said.

Most of the time dogs get the medical marijuana by eating food laced with it — either that which their owners have prepared, or pre-laced foods purchased from dispensaries selling the products.

Dr. Stacy Meola, a veterinarian who coordinated a study looking at the numbers, say four times as many dogs have been getting treatment for ingesting marijuana since medical marijuana was legalized in Colorado.

It’s not always fatal, but it can be.

“Two dogs, however, got into baked goods with medical grade marijuana butter in it, which presumably seems to be more toxic to the dogs, so we did have two deaths,” Meola said.

Most dogs survive, experiencing symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, staggering and sensitivity to sound and light.

In addition to accidental cases, veterinarians say some dog owners think it’s funny to get their dogs stoned– and even post videos of it.

“We need people to realize it is potentially toxic and potentially fatal to their pets,” Van Pelt said.

Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) has announced this year’s Hambone Award winner — a dachshund-terrier mix who chased a skunk under a deck, followed it into a hole, and then disappeared underground.

She wasn’t found and dug out until the next day.

It has been about a year since Peanut’s underground adventure, and she has recovered fully.

VPI said thousands cast online votes in a close race that saw Peanut beat out a cat trapped in a car engine to win the title of VPI’s Most Unusual Pet Insurance Claim of the Year.

The fourth recipient of the annual award, Peanut was found buried in the dirt beneath the deck at the Sicklerville, N.J., home of her owners,  Keith and Christy Wolfram. The day before, she’d gotten in a scuffle with a skunk, chasing it under the deck and into a hole. Apparently the underground tunnel collapsed once she got inside it.

Her owners called the Winslow Fire Department. After hours of poking holes in the deck and searching for the dog, the firefighters were ready to call it quits, but Christy didn’t given up hope.

“When the firefighters saw Christy continue to dig, one of them decided to take a last look,” said Keith. “I remember him shouting, ‘I see her paw!’ and my heart just sank. By the time they got her out she was barely moving. I couldn’t believe she was alive.”

The firefighters administered oxygen to Peanut and she was taken to a veterinarian. She was treated for hypothermia and, after about a week and a half, had made a full recovery.

As the 2012 VPI Hambone Award winner, Peanut will receive a bronze trophy in the shape of a ham, as well as a  bag filled with toys, treats and an emergency pet kit.

Second place went to Pebbles, a  domestic shorthair cat who got stuck in a car engine and was discovered after a 15-mile drive. Pebbles was treated for lacerations and a broken jaw. Third Place went to Bayley, a  Labrador retriever in Maryland who shattered a a 55-gallon aquarium while playing in the house, resulting in a two-inch gash.

The 12 nominees were chosen from more than 1 million claims VPI receives annually.

An Indiana man left his son in the hospital while he went to exact revenge on the dog that bit the boy, police say.

Determined to kill the dog, the man, from Michigan City, stabbed the animal and attempted to strangle it, but was interrupted by police, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The dog’s injuries were so severe it had to be euthanized, said a spokesman for the Porter County Sheriff’s Department.

The 29-year-old man, who wasn’t identified, will be charged with felony cruelty to an animal. Police did not release information on the injured boy or the extent of his injuries.

Police said the suspect’s son and daughter were spending the weekend with his mother and stepfather. On Friday night, the couple’s shepherd-chow mix was eating a bone when the boy lay down on the floor next to it. The dog bit him in the face, according to the police report.

The suspect told police he became enraged when he arrived at the hospital and saw his son’s injuries.

He left and went to his ex-wife’s home, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, took the dog into the backyard and stabbed it in the side, he told officers. He had his arm around the animal’s throat and was choking it when officers, who’d been told what he was doing, arrived at the home and stopped him.
