For what it’s worth, When our Pomeranian is in obvious distress (whimpering/crying) while asleep I have made it a practice to gently stroke her and softly tell her that “it’s OK, it’s only a dream”. She does not seem to wake up (It’s hard to tell in the dark of night), but the wimpering stops, and she goes on about her nocturnal business. If, on the other hand, she’s barking in her sleep (a kind of tiny throaty ‘yip’, I assume that she’s chasing bunnies (or squirrels) and leave her be. Seems to work….
