Battle royal? Queen’s corgis misbehave
Queen Elizabeth’s six corgis — those little bundles of sweetness you might have seen in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics — got into a ruckus with Prince Andrew’s three Norfolk terriers, British tabloids are reporting.
If they are to be believed, one of the terriers “nearly lost an ear.”
Eleven-year-old Max, given by Prince Andrew to his daughter Beatrice, suffered numerous bites and was treated by a veterinarian,” according to the Sunday Express
Both the Queen and Andrew were elsewhere in the castle when the fight broke out at Balmoral, the Scottish estate where the Queen spends the summer.
“It was really nasty,” the Express quoted a “royal insider” as saying:
“The Queen’s dog boy was taking the corgis for a walk and they were joined by the Norfolk terriers which came with Prince Andrew.
“They were being taken along the long corridor leading to the Tower Door before being let into the grounds for a walk, and they all became over-excited.
“They began fighting among themselves and unfortunately the dog boy lost control. The next thing we knew there were horrific yelps and screams and it seems the corgis picked on Max. He was very badly injured and had to be taken to the local vet. There was blood everywhere.”
Not to capitalize on the royal family’s misfortune, or to say the fight was as ”savage” as the tabloids have depicted it, or to imply it was the “dog boy’s” fault … but if the Queen is looking for a new “dog boy,” I would be up for the job.
For that matter, I’d also be happy to assume the duties of the “royal insider,” in the event his or her remarks to the news media have left him or her a royal outsider.

Off-duty animal control officer shoots dog that attacked his puppy in Utah dog park
An off-duty animal control officer shot a dog that was attacking his puppy at an off-leash dog park in Utah.
Police said the animal control officer’s puppy, of unidentified breed, was attacked Saturday by a bull terrier at Millrace Park in West Valley City.
Both the puppy and the dog who was shot survived and were being treated at veterinary hospitals, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune.
Police said the owners of the two dogs attempted to pry them apart. When that failed, the owner of the puppy — an animal control officer in West Valley City — took out a .40 -caliber hand gun and shot the pit bull.
The animal control officer had a permit allowing him to carry a concealed weapon.
No charges were filed pending further investigation.

27 arrested during North Carolina dog fight
A raid on a Robeson County, N.C., dog fighting ring Saturday night resulted in the arrests of 27 people.
Authorities seized 18 dogs, thousands of dollars and several guns, according a news release from the N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement agency (ALE).
Those arrested were from the Carolinas, Ohio and Maryland, and charges included dog fighting, animal cruelty, animal neglect, weapons violations and possessing controlled susbstances, the Fayetteville Observer reported.
“Dog fighting is unquestionably a cruel and vicious event,” ALE Director John Ledford said in a release. “An event can last as long as several grueling hours while the dogs bite and maul each other to death,” he said. “With the help of state and federal partners, this inhumane bloodshed was stopped.”
The arrests were made at the home of Jimmy Jacobs, where almost everyone in the crowd tried to run away when authorities arrived. The state’s Air National Guard provided a helicopter to help track them down, the release said.
Some of the dogs that were seized had serious wounds as well as scars from previous injuries. Veterinarians from North Carolina and the Atlanta Humane Society provided medical care for wounded dogs.
ALE agents were assisted by state Wildlife Resources Commission and Department of Correction officers, Highway Patrol troopers, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and representatives from Norred & Associates, an Atlanta security company whose owner donates services to help break up dog fighting rings.
It was a tip to the company’s dog fighting hotline that led to the investigation.
