Great Dane Zeus now world’s tallest dog

A Great Dane from Michigan has been proclaimed the world’s tallest dog.

In the 2013 edition of “Guinness World Records,” published Thursday, Zeus is said to stand 7 feet, 4 inchest tall when he’s on his hind legs.

From foot to shoulder, he’s 44 inches tall.

The 3-year-old dog lives in Otsego, Mich., with his owners Kevin and Denise Doorlag.

Zeus is an inch taller than the previous record-holder, Giant George. He weighs 155 pounds and eats a 30-pound bag of food every two weeks.

You can watch a video of him here.

An eye-popping achievement?

Bruschi, a Boston terrier, has the biggest eyes of any dog in the world.

So says Guinness World Records, which measured them.

Bruschi’s eyes measure 28 millimeters — more than one inch in diameter. Each.

The four-year-old dog’s owner, Victoria Reed, adopted him from a shelter in 2009, according to People.com.

She said she sought out the official distinction after all the comments she’d get on her dog’s bulging eyes – from friends, family and even her own vet.

We won’t diminish Bruschi’s achievement by getting all bogged down in how some breeders attempt to produce caricatures of dog breeds, including pups with bigger eyes — that being considered the foremost factor in how much dogs appeal to us humans.

We won’t question whether, by shining a spotlight on Bruschi,  Guinness is encouraging breeders to create even more freakish dogs.

And we’ll just barely mention that one of Bruschi’s eyeballs popped out of its socket last year, and that he has only peripheral vision in both eyes.

People.com says “the energetic and playful pooch loves to play dress-up and is otherwise in perfectly good health.”

“Some people do make fun of him for his looks,” she told Guinness. “But I feel like he would go up to them and say, ‘Haha, look where I am now, I’ve got a record for my looks!’”

A new world record: 337 dogs in costume

The San Diego Padres may be in the basement of the National League West, but they set a record this week.

Guinness World Record officials were at PETCO Park’s annual “Dog Days of Summer” event to pronounce it official: The 337 costume-clad dogs is now the record for most dogs in a pet costume parade.

The annual infield costume parade was lead by Tillman, the world famous skateboarding dog. The record setting took place during the Wednesday, before the Padres played the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“It has been an amazing record attempt and I’m happy to say it was successful,” said Freddie Hoff, adjudicator for Guinness World Records. “The 337 dogs in the costume parade was way above the set amount and on behalf of Guinness World Records, I’d like to say congratulations.”

World’s oldest dog dies

chanelChanel, the wiry-haired dachshund who held the Guinness World Record for oldest dog, died Friday, People Pets reports.

Chanel was 21, according to her owners, Karl and Denice Shaughnessy.

Chanel gained notoriety this past spring after an appearance on the Today show where she was presented with an official certificate as the world’s oldest living pooch.

She will be listed in the 2010 edition of Guinness World Records, scheduled for publication this October.

Vermont record falls to London barkers

A group of dogs in London set a new world record for the loudest collective bark.

The 30 dogs emitted a group bark of 115 decibels in Finsbury Park, breaking the record of 111 decibels set by 224 dogs in Vermont last year, according to the BBC.

A German shepherd dog called Daz Lightning set the loudest individual bark record at 108 decibels.

The Guinness World Records confirmed both new records.

The 30 dogs were given three chances to break the group bark record, succeeding on their final attempt.

Chanel, a 21-year-old dachshund mix who has been certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest dog in the world, appeared on the Today Show yesterday, celebrating her birthday with her owner, Denice Shaughnessy.

Wearing a pink sweater and red goggles (because of cataracts), Chanel received her official Guinness certificate on the show.

Denice’s husband, Karl Shaughnessy, contacted Guinness after noticing it had no category for world’s oldest living dog.  He sent in Chanel’s birth certificate showing her birth date: May 6, 1988. In dog years, her veterinarian says, Chanel is 120. She’ll be listed in the 2010 edition of Guinness World Records, scheduled for publication this October.

The oldest dog ever whose age could be verified was Bluey, an Australian cattle dog that died at the age of 29 years, 5 months in 1939.

Chanel wears a sweater or T-shirt when she goes out, because she tends to get chilled easily. She also has a benign tumor on one hind leg, and wears booties to protect the limb. She is prone to getting up in the middle of the night for a drink, and sometimes has trouble relocating her bed.

Denice Shaughnessy was a single mother in the U.S. Army 21 years ago when she went to a shelter in Virginia looking for a dog for her daughter. They paid a $25 adoption fee and took Chanel home.

A few months later, Shaughnessy’s house burned down. That was followed by more hard times in which mother, daughter and dog subsisted on macaroni and cheese. Denice later married Karl Shaughnessy and settled on Long Island, where she got a job as a school secretary.
