Pit bull slurs lead to boycott of 98 Rock

More than 1,000 pit bull lovers in Baltimore have joined in a boycott of 98 Rock after morning show co-host Mickey Cucchiella issued a call for pit bulls to be banned, kicked and executed.

To hear his rant, go to my Facebook page.

To support the boycott, go to its Facebook page.

Cucchiella, the abrasive and often sophmoric co-host of the morning show on WIYY (97.9 on your FM dial), made the remarks after a 7-year-old girl was attacked in Dundalk by two dogs, initially identified as pit bulls.

Later, Baltimore County issued a correction, stating the dogs were not pit bulls, but American bulldogs. Both dogs were euthanized with their owner’s consent. The girl remains hospitalized with serious facial injuries that will require multiple surgeries.

“Here’s what flips me out,” Cucchiella says in the broadcast. “A little girl’s face was eaten and you hear like ‘Oh, that’s terrible.’ Michael Vick killed these idiot dogs that were people killers. That’s what he was doing, he was making them fight each other … The whole world’s in an outrage… ‘Look what Michael Vick did it’s horrible.’

“But one of the idiot f-in dogs that were bred to kill bites a little girl’s face and and people go ‘Oh, I hope she’s ok.”

“… These stupid f-in dogs need to go …  they should be banned from everywhere, they’re dumb, vicious dogs.

“I don’t want to hear from you idiot dog owners … ‘My little Choo Choo is a great dog.’ I’m sure one member of al-Qaeda is probably a decent guy and a little misguided. That doesn’t mean you don’t want to kill al-Qaeda, because most of them are bad …

“I think any dog should be able to be airborne after you kick it.”

Later, Cucchiella insists — contrary to several studies — that pit bulls have the most powerful bite of any dog. “I can grab a border collie’s bite and pry it apart, you can’t do that with a pit bull.”

In response to a pit bull owner who called in to point out any dog can be violent, Cucchiella says, “You can raise a border collie wrong, but a border collie doesn’t have the ability to rip off a child’s face … Don’t get mad at me because you love a dog that’s a killer … Dude, they did it on Mythbusters. There’s only like two or three dogs that a human can not pull apart, the other dogs’ jaws won’t dislocate and grip on.

Cucchiella and co-hosts talk about the lack of animal control officers in the city, and mention picketing at city hall — even though the incident took place in Baltimore County.

The boycott was announced on Facebook after the broadcast, and more than a thousand people joined in the cause within three days, many of them posting photos of their own pit bulls. The group calling for the boycott was started by Steven Webb Sladki, a Baltimore musician.

“I had to start this group on Monday. Of all the things, groups, and people Mickey attacks and offends, I can not sit idle and let him defame my dog. My dog can’t and wouldn’t “fight” back,” Sladki wrote in a comment to ohmidog!

Sladki, who is a member of Bmore Dog, the Baltimore Bully Crew and a volunteer at BARCS, said he chose his dog, a pit bull, because they are misrepresented and misunderstood type, often judged based on appearances — something to which he can relate.

“As a heavily tattooed, musician with a scruffy beard and a shaved head, I too am often misunderstood or misrepresented. At least I have a voice to defend myself. If people only took the time to get to know me and my dog, many of their misconceptions would be cleared up instantly.”

Sladki doubted Mickey Cucchiella would be one of those people.

On his show today, Cucchiella pretty much confirmed that, berating a group of pit bull supporters — Sladki included — who gathered in Canton to protest his remarks.

“He’s called people idiots, morons, and stupid in email replies,” said Michelle Ingrodi, a supporter of the boycott. “This morning, he was making fun of those of us who came out to silently protest in Canton square. He’s just an awful person, and it’s a shame he’s allowed to reach so many people.”

Thanks to Steven Webb Sladki for starting up this group. After THREE DAYS of unrelenting, unintelligible, and unfounded attacks on pit bulls- almost 1,200 people are saying ENOUGH. When will they listen?

Thanks for helping to spread the word about this issue John. I do support freedom of speech, but I believe that even a dj on a morning radio show has some level of responsibility to make an attempt to ensure that what he’s reporting is based on fact – clearly not he case on the 98 rock morning show.
There are so many of us that fight on a daily basis to restore the reputation of our family dogs (“pit bulls”) to that of what it was 50 years ago, when they were the All American dog and cherished family member in so many households.
They have NEVER been bred for human aggression and in fact tend to bond with people more so than many other types of dogs. These types of dogs are abused, neglected and tortured every day – because people and the media have vilified them so tremendously. You’ll rarely read or hear a positive story about a dog (this blog excepted :) ), you’ll rarely hear a news story about a retriever attacking a child…NOT because it doens’t happen, but because it doesn’t “sell” – but if you label the dog in an attack story a “pit bull”(even if it wasn’t…which is often the case, like last weekend)….wow…its all over the news! I pray for the little girls recovery and I applaud everyone who is willing to stand up for more accurate, fact based reporting AND these wonderful dogs.

I had to start this group on Monday. Of all the things, groups, and people Mickey attacks and offends, I can not sit idle and let him defame my dog. My dog can’t and wouldn’t “fight” back. I am his voice and I will be the voice for all Pit Bulls. I was in front of Looney’s and got minimal air time with Mickey. He was typical Mickey, but he did take the time to come out to the sidewalk and talk…though mostly “at” me and not “to” me, but that’s par for the course for him. I gave him some facts, and literature to look over. I have no doubt that he won’t change his opinion, but maybe, just maybe he’ll tame down his comments a bit. At least people got to see a wonderful dog and hear a calm, well spoken owner speak about the breed.

I do NOT own a pit bull. But I do think these dogs are being treated unfairly and yes, I will boycott 98 Rock. Never again! There is so much hate in this Mickey guy, not the person I want to listen to every morning.

It seems to me that the people boycotting Mickey are the ignorant ones. The breeds he has mentioned are and have been bred for aggression, plain and simple. While i agree that enviroment deffinatley comes in to play GREATLY, the fact is the breed intent for these animals is to be aggressive. Mick you are not alone. My Granfather owned a doberman, I thought was the sweetest dog in the world. Doesn’t change that he was very aggresive to anyone that came near me, including my grandfather. Mickey has done his home work, the owneers need to do theres.

If you want to make Mickey’s life miserable, then you should send this story to Howard Stern. I know he’s controversial to some, but he’s an animal lover (his wife is a well-known animal rights activist) and he hates radio DJs like Mickey who try to imitate him by saying outrageous things. If Howard mentions this story, then a lot of his listeners will tie up 98 Rock’s phone lines.

Again, all dogs were bred for something, all dogs have teeth. A pit bull ranks higher then the ATTS behavior ratings then a Dogue de Bordeaux!! If you REALLY look into the issue, you will find current dog attack statistics and more!!

At one time it was common for people to believe that Afriian Americans were somehow inferior. Look how wrong society was then!! This is slightly different, but just because some people say they are bad, doesn’t make it true. Poeple need to stop hiding behind popular FICTION and really look into these amazing dogs.

@jestox-
I believe you may be the ignorant one. There is a difference between dog-to-dog/animal aggression and dog-to-human aggression. Beagles were bred to chase down foxes and given the opportunity will tear one to shreds, as well as rabbits and small varmints. Irish wolfhounds were bred to chase down and kill wolves. Dachshunds, yorkies, and rat terriers were bred to chase vermin out of holes and kill them. Are any of those breeds considered human aggressive? No. Pit bulls were considered “nanny dogs” in the early 1900′s and were often included in family pictures. Petey from the Little Rascals was a pit bull. Did anyone worry about him tearing up the kids? Human aggression in pit bulls is created, either purposely or inadvertently through ignorance. Leaving them on chains, not socializing them, not giving them exercise, not NEUTERING them.. will all increase the likelihood of aggression. Properly raised, socialized pit bulls are happy, loving, people friendly dogs. Often, pit bull bites happen because a person tries to break up a dog fight, and they inadvertently get bitten during the frenzy. It is kind of like stepping into a bar fight.. you might accidentally get whacked by your own friend because so much adrenaline is going through them and they are in fight mode.
Anyhow, Mickey is an idiot and is just fueling the ignorance-induced fear and hatred of pit bulls, or any bully breed, and I hope he gets what is coming to him.

You got to love the people who try to take away other peoples 1st amendment rights…. So Mickey is voicing his opinion about the dogs, good for him. I don’t agree with it but it is his right to say whatever he wants. Mickey is an idiot and doesn’t know what he is talking about 90% of the time but it’s entertainment. Please throw this story at Stern, Mickey would thrive off of it. It would draw more attention to 98 Rock and sponsors would love it. He may sound like an extremist and an idiot but supporters of pit bulls and other “bully” breeds (stupid term for a group of dogs) sound just as extreme and just as dumb as him by making some of these ridiculous comments. You can tell how crazy this site is and most of the people on it by the ad at the top…

Here’s a lil something for the people at 98. I’ve been bit and attacked by more small breed dogs than large breed or “vicious” breeds. It’s not the dog it’s the OWNER! It was us humans that domesticated them thus we, as humans, need to take full responsibility for how our animals turn out. If a Pitt-bull attacks people or animals and you look back to the own or history of owners you will 99% of the time find abuse. So go ahead and down-talk us Pit lovers and the dog because in all actuality you’re only showing exactly how STUPID and Moronic YOU actually are. I have seen more “vicious” breed dogs act like big babies than be “vicious”

I would like to meet this personality in a very public, high traffic location and educate him on THE REAL Pit Bull in America today. After Team Pit-a-Full licks his face to death, he will be allowed to kick, abuse, neglect, and beat them at will.
THEIR retaliation is not what he will need to concern himself with then, rather an ULTRA hostile owner and all animal lovers within ear shot of this neadrathal.

Power to the Pit Bulls, and responsible owners who love and keep them.

Don’t believe Cucchiella, Mickey. This guy is really uneducated, immoral and seems to be the one who is dumb and vicious. He has no background or facts to back his claims. Mythbusters is not a good source of evidence. Mythbusters is inaccurate. He claims pitbulls have the strongest bite wrong. Mastiffs, greatdanes, rottweilers, and larger dogs have stronger bites. German shepards have bigger mouths and will keep on bitting until the victim is seriously injured a reason policeman use them. No its not cause they are easily trainable these dogs will hurt a criminal and are large unlike a pitbull which is small.

This guy also attacks illegal immigrants, minorities. If you have ever heard him he is a pervert, disgrace, immoral, anti-religious

He is also a gay advocate who keeps on trying to persuade into his nonsense.

When I lived in Baltimore, Cucchiella’s cohost supported our animal rescue group’s efforts to raise money for many animal rescue causes…however Cucchiella made fun of her on that venture because the event did not raise as much money as he felt it could have…therefore he considered it a waist of her time. I stopped listening to them then! THis doesn’t surprise me. When people ralize that a dog’s behavior is dictated by how it is raised BY PEOPLE, then dogs of all kinds will stand a chance. Until then…many die for no reason.

He is really nothing more than a middle aged bully at best. He can get away with saying things that he would never say if he crossed one of us on the street. Coward. Anyone who makes a living off degrading others can’t be much of a person himself. Can u just imagine the “wonderful” way in which he is raising his children? Prejudice and hate with a touch of foul mouthed rage. There u go… he’s a real treat. FYI… if you are going to be in the media/news industry, you might want to get your facts straight first, Mickey. You are a disgrace to the profession. I’m actually somewhat relieved he doesn’t like what he “believes” is a pitbull. I wouldn’t wish him on my worst enemy, let alone one of my pitbulls. Anouk, you made a good point as did many of you who say that ANY of us can be bad. It’s not all the breed’s fault, yes they were trained for bull baiting, but if you do the history then you’d realize that presidents and well known boxers here in America owned this breed! So now what? I own 2 AND have 3 children, they play with each other all the time if they had their ways! So NO LETS NOT PUNISH THE BREED, JUST THE DEED if not the owners like Michael Vick-BTW he should have gotten more than what he got!

Most of the comments here are the type of animal “lovers” who are seen as not wrapped too tight by the rest of us normal, animal lovers.

The American Bulldogs genetic profile was reconstituted after the breed nearly vanished by crossing in several breeds, including APBTs. The APBT and AmBull are also frequently mixed. They are both dangerous, gripping dogs.

Actually Anouk, the problem is that you believe that counterexamples disprove statistically-valid generalizations, they do not.

The existence of some mean Labs and nice APBTs does not change the fact that Labs kill and maim at much lower frequencies.

“Often, pit bull bites happen because a person tries to break up a dog fight”

It’s funny that Jennifer first trumps the difference between dog- and human-directed aggression, and then gives away why the two are highly connected. Yes, we agree that the definitions of “human” and “dog” are indeed different, so your point is trivially true by definition.

We live in a country with many people who own dogs and will not allow them to be killed by a pit bull. Pit bulls are commonly dog-aggressive, and so they intersect with dog owners in violence. This is enough reason for pit bull owners to be classed as irrational.

They’re just dog owners loving dogs of a breed created by sociopaths to kill other dogs.

Weird.
